Had to go to my son's play tonight (which he was great in) so I couldn't watch the season finale of Supernatural live but I just finished watching it on the Tivo and all I can say is, "SPN writers, please retire and let fanfic writers have your jobs!!" Season four was so incredibly good and season 5 had all this potential and sadly, it got pissed away and what we got was mediocre at best. It was chock-a-block full of crappy continuity (when there was any continuity at all), character development that seemed like it was suffering from bi-polar disorder, too many "monster-of-the-week" episodes that didn't have any elements that tied in at all to the larger apocalypse arch and a complete 180 on the wonderful friendship that had been begun between Dean and Cas last season. Finally Dean had an actual friend- someone he wasn't totally co-dependent with, someone that believed in him and was there to support him and listen when he needed it without judging him. It was refreshing and heartwarming and then it seems that the writers forgot that Dean and Cas were supposed to actually care about each other.
They really dropped the ball and this season finale was just another example of that.
Having Cas suddenly be given all his powers back (and then some apparently) and then having him just decide that he'd head home after everything he had been through in the last two years with Dean (and Sam and Bobby), after everything that Heaven, it's angels and oh yeah, GOD had put him through was just a cop out! Clearly the writers didn't have enough imagination to figure out how to fully integrate Cas into the show dynamic once the "end of the world" arc was over. They didn't know how to write an angel that was also very human and was torn about where his loyalties might lie now. Having him stick around and live with Bobby and learn to be more human and help them with research because he's been alive forever & knows everything about everything might have been a good way to keep him around next season, but instead, we got him flying off without even the courtesy of a "see ya later". As much as I have always loved Supernatural I found that my main reason for watching this season was for Castiel and his interactions with...well, everyone and anyone. Without Cas in the picture next season I don't know if I will find the show as fun or enjoyable anymore. Misha has been such a wonderful addition to the show and has really stolen the hearts of the fans. To not bring him back next season would be pretty stupid on the part of the show and the network!
And speaking of stupid...in addition to the stupidity of the lameness of their resolution for Cas I have to say that the entire "Lisa" issue that sprang up in the last half of this season has been utterly MORONIC! Even without my Dean/Cas shipper goggles on that whole plot device looks beyond ridiculous. This was a woman Dean knew (in the Biblical sense) for a weekend 12 years ago, and until this season she'd seen him a total of once since that weekend. Also, we're supposed to believe that even though she is really attractive,(and apparently really easy,) appears to have a good job, nice house, nice life, she remains single in the hopes that Dean might one day return? I'm sure Dean's good in the sack, but ain't nobody that good! And the writers acting as if Lisa was Dean's one true love was beyond lame. Apparently they don't watch their own show-the only time Dean was ever in love was with Cassie...canon fact, yo! The reappearance of Lisa also seems to be a pretty clear attempt on their part to pretend like they haven't been feeding the slashy fangirl frenzy over the Dean/Cas ship for the last season and a half either. Seems they got scared of the homoerotic lovefest the fans were having and had to re-establish Dean as a red-blooded, American male who likes boobs and the women that are attached to them.
Something else the writers dropped the ball on this season was the "anti-Christ" kid. Initially he was supposed to have been a recurring character and he was this all-powerful being, even more powerful than Lucifer himself from the way Cas described him, but he was only in one episode and at the end he poofs off to go surfing in Australia or Hawaii and that's the last mention we have of him. Again, it might be helpful if these people actually watched the show once in a while, so they could keep up with what they've been writing. SHEESH!
Overall I felt like in this episode the writing was weak, the emotional manipulation of the fans with Cas and Bobby both being "killed" was cheap and the lame-ass ending with Chuck apparently being God (So God is a drunk pervert who sits around in his bathrobe all day calling phone sex numbers? Nice!) and Dean getting his little fairytale happy ending minus his gay angel boyfriend was just depressing and a major cop out all around.
I'll watch the first few episodes of next season, just to see if they can pull the writing out of the crapper it's been in for the last year, but if Cas is a no-show & if they try to shove some Dean/Lisa love-a-rama down our throats I'll be tuning out.
