I caught two amusing portions of conversation this evening on the way home, and had a unique experience. And I don't mean 'unique experience' in the way that safari holidays are unique. I mean unique in the way that I don't think the particular scenario I experienced has happened to anyone. Ever.
The first was outside the train station. I was finishing my cigarette waiting and standing out of the way. Two men were marching past in a hurry for a train no doubt.
They were going fast enough that all I heard was “…she had a really pretty face, but...”
The second was on the train. A blind man got on at Central I could tell because of the sunglasses at night, but the real give away was the walking stick.
Between stops he received a phone call. I wasn’t paying much attention, but I guessed it was a family member. The snippet of conversation I heard loud and clear (and found very funny) was “…there was a blackout at work today…”
The third thing that happened was actually the first thing to happen. Chronologically anyway. And this is the unique experience I was talking about:
I was downstairs having a break. The place where I work is on a street that goes almost all the way down to the water at Circular Quay. The buses wait there before their next run while having a break or whatever. Because of the hill, and because buildings have to have level floors, the place where I was standing offered me a view of the top of the bus. I had a bit of a giggle when I saw what I saw, and decided the driver must be informed post haste.
I slipped down through the railings onto the footpath, stood at the front doors, and (this is the unique bit) said to the driver “Excuse me. But there’s a dead bat on the roof of your bus.”
