Not bad, DJ boy.

So when are you going to start doing your own music like this?

[The instinct to short circuit his brain prevails over the awkward of everything at the moment. Really, they'd be better off if she'd stop listening to her brain so much and just went with her instincts and feelings all of the time.]

Now you know I have to play this for you.

Good. I'm still holding onto my groupie rights and I bought a new bra the other day that will be perfect for throwing.

[...Yes, short-circuiting of the brain is definitely happening. He clears his throat to buy himself some time to think of what to say, but thinking isn't really working.]

Y-- erm, yeah, I'll... right, yeah, cool. That's cool.

[Mission accomplished!]

So you're good, right?

Good?

[Neil overthinks this immediately to the point where he's not sure what it's referring to, and he makes it into quite the loaded question in his head. He decides to just pick an answer and hope it's the right one.]

Yes. Uhmm, I think so?

[The slight hesitation and the answer turn an already loaded question in her mind into a more loaded question.]

Okay. I mean...with just...everything. Like...with us or my shoes staying at your place.

[He won't attest to "everything," but...]

The uh... the shoes are good, yeah.

[She's very aware that she's being difficult about all of this. Part of the 'being difficult' is born out of outright fear and defense, to keep him from getting close enough to hurt her--as if he couldn't already; maybe she should add the qualifier 'more' to that sentence--and part of it is offense. If he gets past all the difficult, then in some way that doesn't necessarily make sense, she's certain it means he won't hurt her.]

Okay. Because I know it's --I can always come get them if you'd rather...not deal with the whole shoe thing.

[That gets him a big smile that even if he can't see it, he can probably hear in her voice.]

Okay. Thanks...for putting up with the shoes and the--it's a lot of--if it gets to be too much, just drop them on my doorstep and back away slowly. I'll get the message.

[It's an easy break up! Of course she'll spend the next...well, let's just say good long while, checking her doorstep for a pair of shoes.]

[That earns him another big, voice altering teasing grin.]

You know, Stud, you're not very bright but I like that in a boy.

Well. You're totally a compliment.

[The dopey smile is probably audible in his voice. He's getting silly instead of awkward, and that's a good sign.]
