#188. someone you hurt/someone who hurt you

Where are you now?

Dead, a thousand years dead. So they'd have me believe.

But they'd also tell me that you never existed. You're a composite of lesser men, a figure of myth with a gloss of history, a figment, a cipher. What do they know?

No. I don't believe that you're gone. The women took you away in state, as Clarissant took me in secret, out of the world for a while. That's all. For all I know you're there yet, taking your ease in Avalon; but that's not like you. You were too damned conscientious for that. So where?

Where, where, and for how long?

The world's wide. The world grew ever so much wider, after we were gone; and now, drawn in upon itself, it grows narrow again. And I, I keep watching, everywhere I go.

I've been waiting this long time, father of mine. I won't go without you. I don't need your forgiveness, not now, no more than you need mine; but I need to see you. Once more.
