It must be important if you're going out of your way to ask for me. I'm all ears.

He's annoyed enough to dispense with the snark. "You knew about this. Didn't you?"

Giving him her most obviously fake innocent look. "Why, which 'this' would you be talking about, dear?"

"You could have warned me. All else aside, we're a little short on house room."

"So send her to stay with me. We'll find ourselves a nice palace somewhere where we won't bother you, and we can knit and talk about childrearing techniques."

"Oh, aren't you the wit."

"At least I knew she existed. How are my darling grandchildren, by the way?"

"Of course you did. And didn't tell me, damn it!"

"Would you have believed me if I had? You don't like my meddling; I thought it might be best not to in this case."

He can be as cuttingly sweet as she can. "Why would I disbelieve my loving mother?"

"Like it or not, darling, you're a married man. Not that marriage means anything anyway: ask your father."

"All I want is an answer, Mother. Why didn't you say anything?"

She contemplates him carefully. "Because I didn't think you'd want to know, especially not from me."

He laughs shortly. "And you've always tried to spare my feelings."

"Would you have preferred me to invite you over to tea and a chat, and over the second cup: 'Oh, by the way, you're married to a girl you raped and impregnated after I drugged her for you'? It seems so terribly indelicate. Besides you seemed to be getting on so well with...Zara, is her name?"

Mother lies, for all her admonitions; lies outright when she takes the notion, and twists the truth rather more. He's always known that, but it doesn't prevent him paling at that. "Zara's sleeping with Bedivere, the last I heard. Or don't you know everything?"
