interview with...

Sonic Surfer was your alias before Ben released his debut album on Compost. What was the story behind the Surfer and why did he survive such a short time only?
that project was meant to be the platform for my clubbier side, at the end i turned into a club guy and the label got bankrupt - AND i wanted to focus on just one project.

It took you four years to compile a new album after the first one. Why so long? Maybe because the album is so long itself? :-)
in Germany we have a saying: "good things take a while". if i work on music it needs a lot of time, so i rather wait another 3 months to finish a track than finish it too early. if it´s a whole album then - you can imagine ...;-)

Who else could have Jesus been, except b-boy?
good question - and hard to tell since i am not a very religious person.
maybe he simply stands for the optimistic way in life i try to follow as perfect as possible.

Talking very generally, you are somewhat very different from the generally-accepted "German" music scene, i.e. blippy blappy minimal and house. What are your personal thoughts about that? Where does your background stand?
if people meet me in real life they normally say: "hey you don´t look German!". i think us Germans we always try to be as subtle as possible just not to be too obvious in our lifestyle. at some point we might miss the fun part a bit and hold back too much, just hoping not to do something wrong.
this sometimes leads to rather non exciting results in life aswell as in music. i just try to overcome this typical German reflexes with my music.

You call your style bit-hop. What is the etymology of it and what is the musical concept of it?
it combines the digital world (meaning electro and sci-fi sounds) with elements coming from the hip-hop scenario.
not new you would say - BUT i did this album 2 to 3 years ago, not my fault what Kaney and Timbaland do at the moment - or is it?;-)

Your music is appreciated by a broad spectrum of people as well as acknowledged musicians of quite different styles. What are your favorite musicians then? Can you name a genre you can't stand?
hehe, that´s really hard to answer.
i am done with boring music of any kind, whatever that is.

two questions because we're in between of major winter holidays!) What was your best Christmas present?
out of the blue my mum co-financed my new macbook, what a surprise - love her for that, in general.
pretty materialistic right?

Do you ever celebrate Valentine's day?
not really, but now i do in Lithuania - right?

What are the benefits of living in Munich?
it is quiet and keeps you focused. also life isnt that cheap so you gotta make money. since i am living in BErlin now for the last 16 months just take the opposite features and you got the characteristics of my new hometown.

What about minuses?
you can´t get wasted every night with your new friends who don´t know what to do with their time since they don´t have any goal in life besides hedonism.
is that a minus?;-)

Your musical instrument of choice, why?
the bass. cause it´s totally underrated since none can´t tell really what it does. BUT - a nght out without proper bass frequencies wouldnt get the girls going wild.

How many can you actually play, by the way?
depending on the definition, 5 maybe.

Your software of choice?
Logic Pro - a Love n hate thing.

Do you have a personal food recipe that you are proud of?
guess my Dahl is quite tasty.

What track of yours could you recommend to a person that has never heard of you and can only listen to one? I.e. which best depicts you?"
guess Beatbox does that quite well.
