Last night, as I mentioned earlier, I finally watched Stargate Continuum. And my judgment on that movie is that it was good, old-time, Stargate SG-1! In other words, I liked it a lot. I am way behind on things, I just heard over the weekend that Don Davis, who played General Hammond, has died. He died over a year ago, and so has been dead the whole time that I've been watching Stargate, but I didn't know it. So that would make this movie his last Stargate appearance. He wasn't focused on a great deal, but it was nice seeing him, and I will miss having him around in future movies.
Ben Browder turned in my favorite of his performances yet, as his character, Cameron Mitchell, really stepped it up. He ended up being the hero of the whole thing, and I did not mind that he saved the day instead of O'Neill or Daniel Jackson. It was a cleverly done story, involving time-travel and alternate timelines, in which Ba'al managed somehow to escape the removal (execution) of his symbiote by the Tok'ra, and travel back in time to 1939, and stop the Stargate from being transported across the ocean. The ship carrying it was captained by Mitchell's grandfather, and when Ba'al sank his ship, it eliminated Mitchell from existence in the new timeline. However, Mitchell was in transit through the wormhole as these changes to the timeline were taking place, so his existence was preserved. Vala was once again a Goa'uld in the alternate timeline, and Teal'c was First Prime of Ba'al, who was poised to invade a defenseless Earth that had no Stargate program and no idea as to the existence of the Goa'uld. It was a real blood-fest, with Vala double-crossing and killing Ba'al, as well as Teal'c, Jacson, Carter, and O'Neill being killed in that final battle, with only Mitchell escaping through the wormhole/time-machine, that Carter had figured out how to operate in the nick of time, then Mitchell teamed up with his grandfather to mow down Ba'al and his minions with machine guns as soon as they stepped through the gate in 1939. Then that restored the timeline, to Ba'al's extraction/execution, which proceeded normally the second time around. Very cleverly done.
Aside from Stargate, I also ran five miles today and yesterday, and my legs are pretty well shot. Not really painful, just extremely tired and moderately stiff and sore. I will not run again till France. I had a blow-out shoulder workout today, it hurts to just hold my arms in front of me to type, and yesterday was a decent back workout. Tomorrow will be biceps and triceps, then off to France! I am really looking forward to that. I have all the traveler's checks, and have activated my iPhone for international calling and purchased an international data package. I figure that will be a good way to stay online instead of searching out internet cafes or lugging my laptop overseas. My data usage is limited, but I can send the occasional email, do the occasional Facebook checking/posting, and maybe even write some on here.
I finished that interminable DS9 book, really it wasn't that bad but it got hard to follow and went on and on there for about 400 pages. Loved Garak, but the rest was a bit tedious. Now I am about 2/3 through Glenn Beck's book, Common Sense, as well as having read a chapter of the Stargate SG-1 book Roswell, which looks very, very good. It too is a time-travel/alternate timeline story, involving O'Neill as well as the new characters (Vala and Mitchell). I think I am going to absolutely love it. The plan is to finish Glenn Beck before France, and take along Roswell. Anyway, that about does it for tonight.
Live long and prosper.
