Creationist vs Logic, errr, Geologist

Oct 09, 2006 11:41

In the perfect forum of a debate on evolution, Noah's flood, and geology, by which this forum is a fantasy football message board, came my friend's Steve hypothesis that Noah's flood was caused by the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. He also took a critical view on geologist. So I relayed the post to my geology friend Tim(Fridge) who is also a ( Read more... )

“This is simply incorrect. In chemistry experiments we can control the inputs, outputs, and variables along the way. In radioisotope dating of rocks to detrmine their age, we don't know what all of the inputs were nor do we know all of the variables that affected these rocks over the years.” Wrong again. What is locked within crystals is either the original input or the product of the original input. Specimens can easily be examined for evidence that it might have been raised above the locking temperature for a particular isotope pair. If it has been, then this technique is not used. We do not know exactly what has effected the rock but studying it in its entirety allows for very educated guesses ( ... )

“Those are rules for life stated in the old testament. The message of the new testament wasn't to live by such rules, it was to love and help your fellow man and to worship and repent to Jesus for dying for our sins. Jewish people don't believe in the new testament, so they still live by the rules set forth in the old testament.” So you basically don’t believe the Bible, just what parts you like? Your statement means one of to things: either God just decided to start behaving in an entirely different fashion, or the writers of the old testament grossly mischaracterized any stories which they told ( ... )

“life here is just a test” That’s really sweet. We get (most of us) less than a century here on earth, but this determines where we will spend the rest of eternity? Wow that’s fair.

“He found that they were too strict. He made us in his image, so he expected us to be able to follow them, but we couldn't, so he made it easier for us.” Now I thought we really couldn’t get into heaven until Jesus came along. So when we were held to higher standards we were punished, but now that he relaxed the rules allowing to be bigger pricks we can get into heaven?

“but he gave him the freedom of choice” That’s really very nice of him, except he also created evil for us to choose, which obviously wasn’t the most responsible or loving decision ever made.

I think it safe to say that the only thing either one of us is doing is to make the other wonder why we could believe such ridiculous things, to waste our time trying in vain to make the other see our point of view, and to generally get ourselves worked up over our silly little debate.

I’d be happy to read your reply to my latest statement, and to reply or just let it go if you’d like. I just imagine that we’re both growing rather weary of this, but if you’d like to continue this debate, I will, and if you’d like to end it, that’s fine too.

I do not demand 100% indisputable proof of God. I have faith in my relationship with my fiance because of how she acts towards me. If she treated me like crap or gave me reasons to be suspicious of her, then I might question my faith. But since I see that she treats me with love and kindness I have a basis for my faith without definitively knowing for sure. On the other hand have absolutely no basis for God. You can talk about creation and whatnot, but individuals in the Bible were spoken to by God, saw his miracles and whatnot. Thus they felt they had a basis for their faith. You have taken the Bible to be true, you possibly believe you have “experienced” God, and so you have a basis for your faith. I have never “felt” or “heard” or God. People within cultures highly tend to believe in the same deity, Arabs and middle easterners tend towards islam, Europeans tend towards Christianity, Asians towards Buddhism and so on. I think it is quite obvious no matter whether God is real or not that he did not right the Bible, and thus ( ... )
