I'm working on the second essay for my take-home final. It's supposed to be about critiques of consumerism.
This is my thesis paragraph:
Critiques, Condemnations, and Other Delusions of Grandeur
The 1950s in America brought with them the Baby Boom, a booming economy, and booming hydrogen bombs. Booming was very much in style at the time. Along with the boom-boom came the realization that booming might not be all its cracked up to be. And so, a few plucky individuals took it upon themselves to point out the flaws of everyone and everything around them. Booming had met its match in the new technique called Bitching. Over time, they honed this technique into an art form, and incorporated it into very nearly every aspect of their lives, which is nobody wants to sit next to them at parties. And really, who can blame them-I mean, it's a goddamn party, just sit back and have fun for chrissakes. It's like vegetarians. Deep down, you know there's nothing really wrong with what they're doing, and it's not like it even directly affects you, but still, it's the kind of thing that rubs you they wrong way for absolutely no good reason whatsoever. I think it's because half the time they're so goddamn self-righteous that they deserve a swift kick to the groin. It's like the instant some schmuck tells you they're a vegetarian, you want to smack them upside the head, just to be on the safe side-- you're not sure if they're a self-righteous douche, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Eat some cow and like it, fucker. Oh yeah, there's an essay here. In the late 1950s, right before the massive influx of doobies, dirty hippies, and women not shaving their armpits (coincidence? I think not!) people started critiquing consumerism.
whatcha think?
