Title: Everything Changes Eventually
Characters: Chase Utley, Mentioned Harry Kalas, Pat Burrell
Rating: G
Time: April, 2009
Summary: Chase deals with the death of a beloved Phillies icon.
Disclaimer: all fiction, except for Harry Kalas' death and the part about some players crying, because I did see Shane Victorino cry, FYI.
Authors Notes: I was in treatment for my drug addiction when Harry Kalas died. I remember receiving a crying phone call from my dad and he told me what had happened. I am still grieving. It may sound silly, but Harry was my comfort and when you heard his voice you knew that summer was here, and everything was cool because you were watching a baseball game. This is my way of expressing my feelings through Chase Utley, I guess. Now, I don't know the exact details of what happened and when it happened, because as I said, I did not witness this event. Rest in peace.

It was during a game when Chase found out that Harry Kalas had died.

They had won the game, but had lost so much more.

He left the stadium feeling sorry everyone, including himself. He had lost the man that supported him through his ups and downs, the man who he could have a conversation with and not feel lost or awkward. He had lost his friend.

When he walked into his tiny center city condo Jen wrapped her arms around him.
"I'm so sorry Chase."
He nodded and went straight to his bedroom. He lie on his bed face down for a while. He lie on his bed face up for a while. He rolled over to his side. He just couldn't be still. His phone was ringing off the hook, he didn't really care. it was his mom, his dad, his sister, his friends, his team mates, all asking him how he was doing. He was waiting for a specific call. It came late in the night.
"Hello?" Chase knew to always answer Pat's calls.
"Dude."
"I know." was all that the two of them could say.
They sat on the phone in silence for a while. Listening to each other breathe.
"You know," Pat said quietly "When I was going through that slump, in 2003, Harry never lost faith in me. He never failed to pat me on the shoulder, and at the time, that's all that i really needed to feel okay."
Chase sighed in response.
"Baseball's just never gonna be the same."

They had a memorial service for Harry at the ball park.
It was the first time Chase had ever seen his team mates cry. He didn't cry, he's sure that that would make the news and you tube for years so he held back the tears. Pat couldn't make it up. He had a game of his own to play.
The players all went back into the clubhouse to recuperate from what they had just witnessed. Chase has never heard it so quiet in there.
Chase doesn't know if it was the quiet or seeing the coffin that made him cry.
He wasn't a loud crier, but everyone knew he was crying. And it was okay, because they were too.
He received tearful hugs. He received "we'll all be okay, Chase. Don't worry."

But inside, Chase Utley knew that everything was going to change.
