la vuelta de la vida

i'm sitting at cat's hostel in madrid. it's christmas eve, but almost doesn't feel like it. my flight to america leaves tomorrow (well, this) morning at 11 a.m., but i decided to book a hostel ahead of time so that i wouldn't end up stranded in madrid like i was last time.

i love this hostel. it looks like the arabic house we stayed at in fés.

when i got on the train to the airport in rome, i asked a man a question. that man ended up being on the same flight as me, and we changed seats to sit together. his name is pedro and he's from chile. he, me and this guy on my other side, angel talked about politics and things. they were speaking spanish so fast that i almost didn't understand some things.

then pedro and i left the airport together. he's a 33-year-old engineer. i don't know what's with me and the 33-year-olds...but he's nice. i convinced him that sleeping in madrid barajas was a bad idea, and he came to the hostel with me, which was good because i would have hated to come here alone.

he'd never tried döner kebab, so we tried it. we went on a quest for calimocho, but no one was serving it. i did see some guys with plastic cups, a box of vino tinto and a 2 liter of coca cola on the side of the road, though.

that's when i saw it: i was standing on the same street as the pirate bar. i don't know if i wrote about the pirate bar. it was the first bar we went to the first night we (me, amy, alex, john matt) went out in madrid. my life in spain has completed a circle. even when we were walking back, we walked right past the square (cerca del museo prado) where we ate lunch for the first time at the place that ernest hemingway used to go to, where we tried tortilla española for the first time and realized we hated it and would probably hate most spanish food. it was also where we saw the hilariously eurotrash couple.

my life has completed a circle. i'm going to miss you spain. i'm going to miss you so much.

mwah.
