The Harbour...Chapter 60: Insecurities

“Carolyn.”  Marco’s voice was soft as he stood over her.

She opened her eyes and looked up at him.  In the dim light of the veranda she couldn’t see his face clearly.

He didn’t move to touch her.  “Why are you out here?”

She rubbed her eyes.

“I forgot my key,” she said, her voice cracking.

“Come inside.  It’s chilly,” he said.  His voice was low.  He turned and moved toward the door.

He quickly passed the small electronic key over the security panel, punched in a code and the door clicked open.

She stood slowly, as he pushed the door open.   He turned to look back at her, waiting for her to go inside first.  The light from the lamp near the door illuminated his face, but his expression was unreadable.

She took a deep breath and walked toward him.

Not able to meet his eyes as she got closer, she slipped past him and stepped inside.

He followed her, pulled the door shut behind him and folded his arms across his chest. He seemed to be waiting for her to speak first.

She had so much to say, and so much to ask, but all of a sudden she didn’t know where to start.

“Were you with another woman?”  The question tumbled out her mouth, before she could stop herself.

He frowned.  “What?”  His eyes grew dark.

“You think I was with another woman?  Seriously?!”

She had started the conversation, and now there was no way to backpedal.

“Whenever you’ve thought I wanted to be with someone else, you went off and hooked up with another woman,” she blurted out.

“What?”  He asked incredulously.

“Whenever, you’ve thought...”

“I heard what you said!”  He cut her off.

“That’s what you came here for?!”  His eyes flashed.

Carolyn inhaled sharply.  Her mouth opened.  No sound came out.

Marco ran his hand over his face, his eyes closed.  He seemed to be trying to calm himself.

“I’m sorry," she said, her voice shrill.

“It’s all I could think of while I was waiting!”

Her eyes were flooding with tears.

He raised his head, letting his hand fall from his face.  Their eyes met.

“You really think I would do that?”

“But...back in universi...”

“Stop it, Carolyn!  Just stop!”
