So, I ended up working this Halloween night, but it's just as well, because my family decided several years back, after my sister and I were too grown up* to trick-or-treat anymore, that we would just stop dedicating our one night a year to celebrating it. It's sad, yes, since it was my father, and not I, who made the decision to stop decorating, stop passing out candy, stop costuming up, etc etc etc. However, I'd already made the decision for myself that when I've got a family of my own, we go all out. We'll more than likely be the annoying family down the block with decorations spread out all across the lawn, twinkling lights outlining the entire house (and probably the mailbox and the trees, too), and so on and so forth.
Funny thing about tonight was that not a single child in our neighbourhood was out trick-or-treating. I dunno if that says something bad about my neighbourhood's reputation, or whether or not the kids really feel like trick-or-treating anymore, but even though the lights on our porch were turned off, I still checked outside from time to time to try and catch a glimpse of the nighttime candysnatchers. No success.
We did, however, have many people wander in from Universal Studio's Halloween Horror Nights, with horror makeup all over their faces, coming up to the front desk, asking if we had any candies.
"I give you cookie instead?" I ask, rather flustered. They happily nodd and then squee away into the dead of night. At least they had a Happy Halloween. lol
