I'm sorry, but I must disagree with you again. sonofglory July 19 2005, 05:28:33 UTC
People are selfish; that's true. But why are they selfish? Why do they constantly look for something to appease them? It's not that their desire to be happy makes them so selfish, but that they are happy in the wrong things. Example: A man likes to drink beer; whenever he's not drinking beer he's not happy. He's drinking beer when he kills the boy walking down the side of the road. For him, his happiness equaled the death of the boy. But then there's the man who is happy working in the soup kitchen. He gives soup to the poor and is happy when he sees all the mendicant smiles. Even when he leaves the soup kitchen he's happy because he knows that the people at the soup kitchen were able to eat. It doesn't trouble him that he's not there at that very instant still serving soup.

It all depends on where we put our happiness. Why put happiness in something as fleeting as high spirits or companionship?

we have happy moments, but happy moments fade away...

catty and i talked about this update actually, it inspired both of us, because robert is speaking something that people wouldn't be willing to accept, because no one wants to admit that they've never been truly happy... but another point that he made was that people are so self-serving, that happiness is selfish, we always want more more more, and it's the truth. regardless of whether the soup kitchen guy is serving people, he's doing it because he wants to make himself happy or feel better, not because he wants to see the other people happy and full... we can't do good things for people just because it makes us happy, just because it gives us glory.

we need to give up completely on ourselves and turned to others' joy... because when we can't make ourselves happy, we can sure try to make others happy, but for their sake, not our's.

I'm just saying, if it makes one happy to do good things for others, why quit doing it just because it makes one happy?

Besides, can you really judge people to be self-serving like that?

All I'm saying is that we shouldn't do things just because they make US happy. Should we stop doing good things for people? No. Should we change our reasons for doing them? Absolutely. We should do good things for others, because we give two shits about them, not because it makes us feel better.

And yes. I think people are very self-serving. People do almost everything that they do for themselves. I am no exception and I'd never say I was, and I know that I see it in EVERYONE that I've ever met.

i dont mean to be rude, but what is the point of changing our self-serving ways if you are going to automatically say that we are acting out of selfishness, you jump to say in your third comment that we are all self-serving you say this without knowing everybody, so in your mind we will always be selfish, so we cant change, even if we do you will still say we are selfish. Once again im sorry if i am being rude, i am very selfish, im just saying maybe everybody isnt, and even if they are, there is no reason for them to change with the mentallity that you have
