Mulberries

The mulberries around here are apparently ripe. Every so often, you'll be walking along and find the ground is covered in dark purple blotches, where the fruit fell to the ground and people stepped on it. Sometimes there are birds pecking at them. Occasionally I think about plucking the fruit off the trees and eating them myself, but I never

The mulberries are ripe here, too, and they are delicious. This is the first year I've eaten them and I really wish I had started doing this earlier. The best way to pick them in large quantities is to put a sheet under the ground, whack the branches with a stick and collect them when they fall. Seriously, it's a lot of fun. I have a bunch in the fridge that I need to wash and freeze for later. If I can get enough, I'm going to try and make jam. If not, cobbler.

Heh, that does actually sound fun. I've never picked mulberries in large quantities before - just a few off the tree in front of my parents' office. But it makes me kind of happy to see them here. Not necessarily because of any associations with home, but just because fruit trees make me happy. I mean, growing and ripening and sweetness - what's not to like? ^_^

Mm, cobbler. I haven't had cobbler in a really long time. Maybe I should try to make some. It's one baked good I have not yet attempted. I've had pretty good luck with pie, though. Hmmmmmmm...

A lot of municipalities hate fruit trees because they think it makes a mess - and with mulberries, I kind of have to admit they have a point. But I think the benefits of having viable fruit trees outweigh the disadvantages, and they're certainly more interesting and useful than those damn Bradford pears ( ... )

^_^ Unfortunately, some of the trees aren't easy to get to. And the ones that are...well, I feel kind of odd picking fruit off a random public tree, you know? Particularly since my only company would be what New Yorkers tend to refer to as "flying rats". On the other hand, mulberries. *sad conflicted face.
