I wrote this last night, so bear with me...
You may not agree with me, but the current season of Doctor Who is definitely the worst of the lot. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of the episodes individually, but as a season, it is quite bad. Hear me out. (WARNING: SPOILER ALERT. If you haven’t seen the current DW season, don’t keep reading)
First off, the Silence, what the fuck is with their story arc?! Moffat built it up so beautifully in season 5 (brilliant season, in my opinion), and then the first two episodes of season 6 were awesome, but the ending was so abrupt and they haven’t even addressed them again until the latest episode (“Closing Time”).
Secondly, River Song. I love River, I love Alex Kingston (though Kate Winslet would have been awesome too), and I actually did like the fact that she ends up being Amy and Rory’s daughter (Melody Pond, clever play on words with the name, I love it). I, however, have issues with the episode “Let’s Kill Hitler” and the introduction of Rory and Amy’s friend Mel. It’s obvious that Moffat is just making up River’s story as he goes. For example, there are clues in season 5 that River has no idea who Amy and Rory are. It would have been a lot better if Mel had been introduced earlier.
Thirdly, all these filler episodes. The first half of season 6 was alright, two completely pointless filler episodes, even though the Neil Gaiman episode was awesome and is one of my favourites. The second half seems to be all fillers apart from “Let’s Kill Hitler”. I do like the Amy & Rory relationship being developed, and the episodes themselves are quite brilliant, but I really do not like the fact that they seem to have nothing to do with the main storyline. I’m still clinging to the hope that the finale will tie the episodes together, because that would make the season feel a lot better. Knowing Moffat, however, it’s going to just as anti-climatic as the mid-season finale and the first episode of the second part. I think his problem is that he’s built it up way too much. I’ve also realised that I’m less excited about Doctor Who than I used to be. I’m less keen to watch/read teasers about the upcoming episodes just in case I read something that will make me feel disappointed about the series.
Anyway, that’s my opinion on the series so far. Open discussion, feel free to disagree with me, I’d like to hear your reasoning.
