"..that was the encore of your life." -anonymous

I experienced a once-in-a-lifetime performance yesterday.
It featured 77 drummers from different bands, on 77 5-piece drum sets, at the Emprie-Fulton Ferry State Park right in between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges.
It was meant to be performed only once on 7/7/07
The Boredoms, who apparently have been around for 20 years, are an experimental Japanese band who I unfortunately hadn't really heard of until now. They made this event happen. The main man, Eye, stood on a platform in the middle of the spiral shouting, synthing, and banging on his six guitars (i dont know what to call the instrument really, it consisted of six guitar necks and im assuming they were all in different tunings so he could just hit them with these "guitar-sticks", they made some powerful sounds)
The drums were set up in a spiral as the audience sat around them, finding their favorite drummers and sitting right by their side.
The location was already beautiful enough, but when they slowly began to play, one by one playing their beats spiraling inside out, we were all immediately captivated.
They played for 77 minutes, non-stop, until the sun set over Manhattan. People were having tribal experiences while they tripped, a large group of us got up and started dancing to the wall of sound.
It's funny, apparently at the Whitney they are displaying artwork from the 60's and 70's and my friend was telling me how she could see the faces of those who had lived in that time and how they must have wished they could re-live it.
Well, this FREE event certainly brought about that kind of peace and hippie-love. I was even able to partake in a lil' mary j. as someone random kid passed me a joint. I couldn't resist, it was a rare occasion,
and I hate to be cheesey, but I was already high on life anyway.

I knew it was going to be amazing, I mean you can't go wrong watching 77 drummers play their hearts out... but really, it was absolutely phenomenal and I can't compare the experience to anything else, not even a Sigur Ros show.

When it had ended I heard someone jokingly say, "Encore! Encore!"
in which his friend replied,"Encore?! That didn't need an encore. That was the encore of your life!"

I only wish that I could have had all of my friends there.
