Major Assistance Needed ASAP

Tech problem:
My father was trying to back his computer up this morning and "it took much longer then normal. And then the programme just disappeared." He has a laptop and backs the computer up onto an external drive using StorageSync by SimpleTech. He had bought a programme recently RegistryBooster 2010 which he decided to run after the failed back up and it said he had 40 000 bad registry entries. After deleting them and restarting the computer a lot of icons on the desktop where missing and everything else on the computer. He can only find the documents Masha helped him edit last night otherwise all the files are gone and when he tries opening any programme he either gets a message that it is stored on an unavailable network drive or that a file is missing and he needs to insert the Nuance PDF Pro 5 cd. Where his hard drive used to only have 5 gb free it is now almost half empty. The programme that he used to back up onto the external is missing, but when he tries installing it again it says the previous version must be uninstall before installing the new version and that can't be done because Add/Remove Programs is missing from the control panel now too. The files seem to be missing off of the external as well.

If anyone has seen anything like this before, please tell me what should be done. I'm going to be at home at 7 pm tonight to try fixing this. I have a programme for recovering files off of hard drives that's really good to try saving files off of the external, but since StorageSync only does file to file back ups according to their website I won't be able to recover the software. Hopefully he has the CDs for the programmes in case everything is saved on the external so that if worst comes to worst we can reformat the hard drive, reinstall the software and return the files but I would prefer to avoid that method.

Thanks.
