Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Amazon Summary: All children should believe they are special. But the students of Hailsham, an elite school in the English countryside, are so special that visitors shun them, and only by rumor and the occasional fleeting remark by a teacher do they discover their unconventional origins and strange destiny. Kazuo Ishiguro's sixth novel, Never Let Me Go, is a masterpiece of indirection. Like the students of Hailsham, readers are "told but not told" what is going on and should be allowed to discover the secrets of Hailsham and the truth about these children on their own.
For anyone in real life who keeps up with this thing, you've likely already been rec'd this book, but it's so beautiful and heartwrenching and somehow simple that I can't help but make anyone and everyone I know read it. It's dark, in its own way, but also stunning and I can guarantee that you'll get sucked in, and when the 'strange destiny' of the students of Hailsham is revealed, you'll be fascinated and disturbed, all at once. Read it right the eff now, people. Go.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Ms. L'Engle's Website Summary: Meg Murry, her little brother Charles Wallace, and their mother are having a midnight snack on a dark and stormy night when an unearthly stranger appears at their door. She claims to have been blown off course, and goes on to tell them that there is such a thing as a "tesseract," which, if you didn't know, is a wrinkle in time.
Meg's father had been experimenting with time-travel when he suddenly disappeared. Will Meg, Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin outwit the forces of evil as they search through space for their father?
Put simply, if you haven't read this, I don't know if we can be friends. It is my all time, hands down, no questions asked, no comparisons to be made, no doubt about it favorite kids' book. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the remainder of the series, but this book is amazing; it contains every element and is somehow creepy without being grotesque, though some of the imagery is less than pleasant. It's a literal battle between good and evil, love and nothingness by the end. And it's amazing. Again, at the risk of repeating myself: Go read it now.

In an effort to keep this list to two, I'm only recommending completed stories.
"A Murmur of Fire in the Vein" by ElleCC
Summary: One stormy Seattle night, the last person Bella expects to see appears without warning at her door. How will history - hers and his - impact their unexpected and growing friendship? AH, Bella/Jasper.
Why should you read this, despite the fact that everything about it flies in the face of Stephenie Meyer's canon pairings?
Because it is amazing. Never, in my fan fiction career, have I been pulled into a story like I was with this one. I found myself making excuses to stay up until ridiculous hours because Elle would be updating. I found myself in love with a broken and beautiful Jasper, and rooting for him in spite of the odds. And mostly, I fell in love with Elle's ability to weave a complex story into a way that appears simple and to the point. She's not overly wordy and her style is gorgeous. This story is the reason I jumped on the fic-JxB bandwagon. Go read, Twific fans. I promise you won't regret it.
"Creature of Habit" by EZRocksAngel
Summary: Bella begins working for the elusive and distant Edward Cullen who she discovers is hiding behind an elaborate charade to maintain his secret lifestyle. Bella is determined to find out the mysteries of Edward Cullen but with what results? AU, OOC.
GOD. This story is utterly amazing. It is complete in every way in that Angel doesn't leave a single stone unturned. While there is room for a sequel, it would necessitate a brand new plot because every bit of this story was wrapped up nicely, tied in a bow and handed to the reader.
You are faced with an intriguing version of both Edward and Bella, and Angel manages to portray every canon relationship - Bella & Angela's friendship, Edward and Bella's romantic love (eventually) and even the slight antagonism between Jake and Bella over her relationship with Edward (though there is no romantic, overly dramatic love triangle coughECLIPSEcough, so don't worry about that). It's just readlly friggin' well done. That is all.
