i had a drinking problem last night.

last night, 'round about dinnertime, i was considering whether the 2002 Venezian Merlot would make a good pairing w/ a grilled cheese sandwich, and i broke my damn corkscrew. i dunno, it just fell apart mid-screw. i guess i was too hard on it. that's never happened before, i swear.

but maybe it happens to all aspiring winos connoisseurs at some point in their drinking career...

i had to literally mine the freakin cork out w/ a pair of needle-nose pliers & a fork. *chuckles* it wasn't very funny then...

so after i finally got into my freakin wine, i was too emotionally exhausted to paint- i just watched a movie instead- l'eclisse. yup- italian. from the early 60's- directed by michelangelo antonioni. i really like his work- he frames each shot like a cubist painting... it's black & white, so there's a lot of attention to texture... a film you want to touch. i think i may watch it again tonight w/ the commentary so i can grasp more of it-- it's an odd little drama about failed relationships- but typically of a film of this nature, it doesn't spell out everything the characters are thinking & feeling in obvious dialogue & flashbacks & cheap effects. you have to gather all the emotive information about the story from a pregnant pause, a lingering silence, a facial expression... you have to participate, to feel & empathize & emote w/ the story- so much more layered & complex & engaging than typical american cinema. hollywood simply asks that you watch & hands you the whole watered down 'mystery' laid open & fully exposed in a slick package of formulaic structuring. (not that there aren't some great american films & directors that i absolutely love... i'm just saying- i prefer the independents & the foreigners...)

i got a taste for strange.

sigh... in other news: i feel like i've just strapped myself into the chariot of new rollercoaster & ever-so-slowly i'm hitching up that big initial hill... the air is uncomfortably tight & electric w/ impending wheee!

vino, cinema
