dancing exercise

today Chris O and I started our "dancing/grappling" exercises, in which I basically learn to read signals from tactile cues given as in dancing. we just basically do box stepping, with Chris O leading and me following, "reading" his nonverbal cues and sensing where his weight is at any given moment. It's a frustrating exercise for me, because I want to lead, dammit, but I have to follow. :P I have to learn how to read his energy and respond. trying to repress that natural instinct... that is hard.
But it's a very practical exercise, gets me to notice position as well as weight shifts, stepping, as well as my opponent's energy, movement, and position.
I'm just not used to giving up control and responding, instead of initiating attacks. It's a new way to think for me, hard to learn, but once I learn it I will be a better fighter. Chris also said I did much better than he thought... he doesn't have very high expectations for my fighting ability. I'll show him. I'll show them all. I'll show them good. :P
During this time, of course, there was a lot of physical contact. I could tell when Chris was a little "distracted" and during one point I had a lot of energy myself, we had to calm down after that. I had to wait until my energy flushed down into my center, instead of keeping it up high like I normally do. I need to learn to do that, move with my hips instead of my upper body, keep my shoulders down, head up, God there are a lot of things to remember. :P
Especially when I was touching him, when he was touching me... god damn. god damn. god damn. talk about distractions. although I did better than usual. I am capable of learning, I am capable of changing. I am capable of fighting. I am capable.
And I will do *anything* to become a better fighter.
almost anything.
but damn close to anything.
