Teacher-ALT relationships are really important; they can mean the difference between a bad lesson and a good one.
I teach with 3 different teachers 1 male 2 female.
Edna Mode you already know about, our lessons are really good and tight. We both have our established roles, but I also get a lot of time to goof off/study in them. The students love our lessons because we get along.
The male teacher, Mr. K is fluent in English, a rarity in the Japanese education system. He occasionally trots over to my pink desk to discuss his theories on child language pedagogy or how the political system in Brazil could be affecting some students at another school. A teacher for 30 years now, he is incredibly kind, and is always happy to let me try new ideas and give some input. I am helping him with his study for the level 1 eiken.
The other teacher is Mama sensei. She has a daughter my age and lets me know it. We do not have a close relationship, and there are some days when I wonder at why I am even helping her classes, since I do nothing in them anyway. No matter, but because I do not like her as much as the others, I tend to get narky in her classes. Kids fall asleep and while I love my 1st years, in class there are times when I want to them outside. A no- no in Japan
Thus you can see why a good relationship is important.
