If you do get hit by a car like I was yesterday the first thing you do is call the police. Now I would never do this back home, but here in Japan road accidents (even the teeniest of bumps) are very seriouse. After calling the police (which I didn’t thus the warning) call your school. After your school, call your BOE or the head of your organization. While waiting for the fuss to ensue get the hitters (or the hitees) details. Make sure you get their license number and well as their plate number.
Then and only then do you start to cry.
What I did was
Get hit riding my bike home
Scream at the guy to speak easy Japanese (too much keigo and I was in shock)
Get his details
Limp home, have a bath and decide I’m all right and don’t need to go see a doctor
Tell them at school the next day
6 hours later and I’m really regretting not knowing the Japanese protocol for this kind of situation.
But I am still getting my bike fixed, have a trip to the hospital planned (yay for hypochondria) and after a few lectures know more about the Japanese legal system than I need to know.
If you are on a bike and a car hits you, then you are in the right, even if it’s your fault. The person in the littlest transport wins in this case. Just make sure you don’t hit anyone as it generally means a life time of servitude :P
