I think some of it was radiation, too, from absorbing the nuclear overload from the gate.

I vaguely remember something from old!skool Who about each regeneration being different, just as every incarnation is different. I quite like the previous poster's theory about radiation, though.

*am still having trouble making my brain concentrate on anything other than jumping on the Master while he's strapped to that chair, and giving my undivided attention to his neck until he's writhing and gasping for more*

The TARDIS seems to help with the regenerative process (definitely in the case of One->Two, Four->Five and Five->Six) so I took it as Ten trying to delay it and the TARDIS damaging itself having to force it.

Which doesn't say anything good about Ten, tbh, but it's how it makes sense to me.

my protective rationalisation of choice is that Ten broke his TARDIS by being a douche

Good theory. I was wondering that too, since that hadn't happened before. And maybe it was also 'cause he was resisting the process. In the end, he really, really didn't wanna go and maybe it was more explosive 'cause he was trying to hold it back. But that might be a stretch, I dunno.
