It's very disappointing for a six year old boy to be told off for looking up his mama's guests' skirts, especially when the only other ladies he'd ever met happened to be mermaids and therefore he only wanted to find out how they walked on the great big tails he was convinced they had instead of legs ( Read more... )

You wouldn't confuse humans with merpeople if you saw what they look like in my world.

What do they look like in your world, Ginny?

Not like people.

The ones I met did, apart from the tails. I didn't know they were mermaids at all at first, I'd never even heard of mermaids when I was that age.

There's a portrait of a mermaid in one of the bathrooms at my school, and I expect she's the storybook sort. The ones that look half-human. The real ones back home don't look nearly as pretty-or act as full of themselves, in my opinion. Yours speak English, do they?

Yes, they did, more or less. Though they wouldn't understand my name was Christopher, they thought I was some kind of creature called a 'clistoffer'. They spent most of their time laughing, I used to think them rather silly.

[Well, now, there you have it. Ginny's laughing too.]

Clistoffer?

Yes, I'm afraid so. But they were always very nice to me.

They're supposed to be fairly warlike back home, so that's good to hear. Especially if you were looking up their skirts, never mind that they weren't actually mermaids in the end.

Oh, no, the ones I met first were mermaids. It was in another world I'd wandered off to by accident. They weren't wearing skirts - but since I didn't know anything about mermaids I assumed all ladies had tails and fins. And chose a very bad time to test that theory. Mama had only just convinced Lady something or other to visit her.

Sounds like you were a right handful for your mum. Did she give you a very stern telling off?

Hardly, she only ever saw me when she was showing me off or telling me about her plans for my future. She started to scold me in her room but was distracted when one of her fake hairpieces turned out to be a rat.

...and no, I didn't do it on purpose.
