A question for the masses!

Memories.

Those who have left the City and returned, whether you remember being here in the meantime or not, those who have made deals with the deities, even theories. What happens to our memories, in the City and back in our worlds, that some of us remember so easily while others don't remember a thing?

I have wondered before if it is a price that we pay for our stay, but it seems too inconsistent to be so.

Yes, it would make more sense if it happened in the same way, but it does not seem to at all.

The fact that some remember when they return, and others don't, is all the more curious. I have been here at least twice before this stay, and don't recall it at all.

There doesn't seem to be any sort of pattern to it at all. Perhaps I'm looking at it the wrong way.

There is the possibility, I suppose, that we forget so that our stay here does not noticeably affect the predictable course of our futures.

That's exactly what I worry about, especially if you find out more about your future in your own world.

But then again maybe they make us forget so we aren't able to work towards rescuing the other people in the City once we've returned home.

Ripples in the space-time continuum benefit no one.

That's another possibility, though I'd imagine there are only a small portion of citizens who have the ability to travel worlds, to start with. It wouldn't much explain why the others forget.
