The power went out just before 10 PM on Thursday night. The ice storm had finally found a breaking point somewhere in the system, as we knew it would.
The tree landed on my car just before midnight. As damage goes, it could be a lot worse. If I had left it parked in my usual spot, it probably would have been flattened. As it is, it just had an eye poked out. I think I may start calling it Tigh.
The rental vehicle turned out to be a Chevy Trailblazer. I'm not big on SUVs, but it certainly came in handy for that emergency Home Depot run this afternoon. I now own a generator and a chainsaw.
The generator came online about an hour and a half ago, thanks in huge part to my uncle Mike, the electrician. He jacked that thing straight into the circuit box and it's running the whole house. It's going to take a little while for the heat to get back up to normal. It was down to 45 degrees in here before the generator started. But that's fine. There's heat, electricity, phone, and internet. Still no cable, though.
Maybe the power will come back on for real tomorrow. Hard to say. The look of that smashed transformer a few blocks away makes me question the reality of the promises I've heard. But I can live without that for a little while longer. I have a generator.
And a chainsaw.
EDIT: Now with
pictures.
