Part 4: Konbini
"Of all the things to forget..."
Nino pushed open the door to the convenient store and just rolled his eyes. Pulling his cap lower, he held the door for her while she jabbered on about toothbrushes being the first thing she packs when going on vacation.
He followed her to the toiletries aisle and watched her look at the small selection carefully.
"Just grab a cheap one and let's go." He told her.
"No, we have to pick a nice one."
"Ehhh...It's just a toothbrush."
"No."
"Let's just take this one." He said as he unhooked a blue toothbrush and walked away. He hadn't gone far when she suddenly pulled him back and yanked the brush away.
"Don't you care about what you use for hygiene? Geez."
She walked back to the shelf and returned the cheap blue toothbrush.
"No, not really." He said lazily.
"Well then, that's why I'm here." She said. "I'll care for the things you don't care about."
He crossed his arms and leaned on the wall while she made her choice.
“Got it!”
“Finally.”
He told her he’d start the car while she paid for it and so Nino left the convenient store. She came out a little later and came inside the car with a bag full of potato chips, soda, and candies.
“I leave you for one minute and this is what you do?”
“What? It’s food. I need food for the road unlike one person I know.” She replied. “Oh, and here’s your toothbrush. I’ll put it here on the dashboard so you won’t forget it later.”
“Alright, tha-What the heck??”
He snatched the toothbrush from her hand and stared at it.
“What’s this??”
“It’s a kiddie toothbrush. Isn’t it cute?” She grinned. “It’s got soft bristles, a no-slip grip, and it has a cute little Keroppi at the end.”
She cackled and opened a bag of chips.
“Why in the world did you buy me a kiddie toothbrush??”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“What are you saying? It’s for kids!”
“Sweetie, you look twelve anyway.”
“Okay, first of all, I don’t look twelve. I look seventeen.” He argued. “And second, this thing can’t clean my teeth properly.”
“I thought you said you don’t care about it?”
“I thought you said you’ll care about the things I don’t?”
“Alright, fine. I’m sorry. But let’s keep it, okay? It’s cheap anyway. It’s also travel-sized and it has soft bristles. Plus, I chose the one with a frog. You like frogs don’t you?”
“I did when I was four.”
“That’s not so far back.”
She took the brush from him and kept it in her purse.
“It changes colors when wet too.” She informed him as she munched on a potato chip.
“Oh it does, huh?”
“Yeah, it turns blue.”
Nino let out an exasperated sigh and started to back out of the parking space.
“Didn’t they have Doraemon?”
