When Sano looks at her, really looks, he can't understand how he could have mistaken her for a boy. Mizuki's face is soft and round where a boy's would be lean, her neck a perfect smooth arch. All of her physical features are on the delicate side, to her thin tapered fingers, the curve of her mouth and the way the tips of her eyelashes fan out against her cheeks.
He knows she would blush if she knew what he was thinking, so he keeps his gazes covert, but he can't miss the way Nakatsu looks at her, his heart evident in his eyes. It makes Sano's own heart beat a little faster, the need to draw Mizuki nearer.
When she can't come and see him participate in the preliminary rounds for the Nationals, because of a missed essay, he's disappointed, but not as much as Mizuki is. She hits her fist against the desk and swears, which makes him laugh.
Later, when the lights are dimmed and he can just make out Mizuki's form moving in the dark, he says, “Are you asleep?” at the same time she asks, “Sano, are you asleep?”
She giggles, and then coughs, trying to turn it into a more manly sounding chuckle, and Sano grins.
“No,” he answers. “You know I'll be gone for a week, right?”
“Yes.” Her tone is cautious.
“If you get lonely....you can always call me. Or, you could always...”
“Yeah?” Mizuki prompts.
“You could sleep in my bed,” Sano finishes in a rush, and is thankful for the dark, because he can feel the blush settling on his cheeks and burning the tips of his ears. “If you want.”
Silence from Mizuki, and Sano wonders if she can hear the pounding of his heart, a steady drum beat of want.
“I'd like that,” she says, and even though he can't see her face, he imagines she's smiling.
