Being a Christian isn't a problem at all, necessarily. But she likes to have theological discussions, and we've already gotten to the "well, I think you're wrong" point a couple of times. Which makes the dating thing more complicated. As for the Sociology... I don't know any good sociologists yet, so I've got to add one to my collection!
I like having religious discussions. It seems to me that in the US you can talk about sex and bizarre shit like butt plugs more easily than you can talk about faith. It is hard to find someone who is willing to even say words like "God". This is one of the many reasons why I love teh Fellmama.
Religious discussions can be great - the trouble is, I have an even harder time articulating ideas than usual. And, unfortunately, 'agreeing to disagree' isn't particularly encouraged. Still, it's definitely better to have discussion - hopefully, since we've made such progress on sex talk over the last few decades, religion will be soon to follow.
If you and your girlfriend enjoy talking about sex and gender issues, allow me to recommend "The Guide to Getting it On!" by Paul Joanides. It is pretty much the only book you need on the subject.
I don't know if sociology can be helped, though.
