Live at Hard Rock in Orlando, Florida
Since day one this show was announced until the day of the show, I searched high and low for the opening bands that would be performing. I found nothing. Nothing on the band's official or fan sites. Nothing on their My Space. Nothing on Ticketmaster. Nothing from the venue. Nothing. So I'm to imagine they have no one touring with them and no one opening. Doors opened at seven. So I decided to get there a half an hour after the doors opened. Show was scheduled to start at eight. Eight rolls around, here comes the first opening performance. I was already pissed, but had high hopes for it to be some what listenable.
Imaad Wasif, one man with one acoustic guitar. Big emo hair with big emo, slow, acoustic songs about love. The crowd loved him. Hundreds of claps and screams after every song ended. He played for twenty minutes, though the last five minutes of his set was him holding his acoustic guitar above his head and letting it feedback. Complete waste of time.
Twenty minutes later, the second opening act came on. Yes, a second opening act. Out of the zero listed, this was the second one to play. Again, some hope of this being an actual band and actually performing well.
Deer Hunter was the name. They consider themselves psychedelic punk. The band had your typically bland punk rock sound, with the singer stretching out one word for a verse. It reminded me a really, really weak and mellow version of Isis. The singer came out in a green robe. Then would slowly strip off each layer of clothing, eventually revealing his deformed body. It was like looking at the screamer from Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin, but in human form. He was wearing a tank top that said "I Am Not Anorexic" on it. They played for forty minutes. I was singing Say Anything songs in my head during the majority of their set, so it really didn't seem all that long. But it was still extremely ear gouging.
It took forty minutes to set up for three performers. One was a singer and doesn't even pick up an instrument and all of their stuff was already on stage. So it basically took forty minutes to sound check. I was already in a terrible mood due to an hours worth of terrible music. I didn't have any interest at all in hearing any of the new material since I only liked Fever To Tell and knew they wouldn't be doing much off of that album. So in that sense of things,
I couldn't imagine being impressed by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Nick (guitar) and Brian (drums) came out at started their thing. Then the first opening act came out along with them. He had the same exact set up as Nick and the songs sounded absolutely no different than from their live material as a three piece. Even though this is the first time I've seen them live in person. But, I have a fair amount of live videos and audio that I've scored over the years.
Karen ran out on stage in some madness of an outfit. It looked like the used
blue and purple glitter paint on a box of colostomy bags, then stapled them to a shirt and threw it on. Needless to say, it look quite ridiculous. After the first two songs, she stripped that thing off to reveal her spandex crown outfit. Which remained her attire for the rest of the night. Immad was an orange jump suit on, while the other two folks just had on some jeans and a shirt. None of the other three did anything spectacular, so everyone's eyes were quite affixed on Karen for the majority of the show. She seemed to have the most fun during the songs from Fever To Tell. Running back and forth on stage, kicking her legs out constantly, jumping around. For a lot of the other songs, she'd stand walk a few feet and laugh. Or hide behind one of the gigantic podium's for awhile, then crawl out on her hands and knee's with the microphone in her mouth.
In the background, there was a gigantic Show Your Bones cover image. It was from a projector set up in the back of the venue. It didn't do anything special, just chilled there off and on through out the set. Five songs from Fever To Tell. Eight songs from Show Your Bones.
I literally despise all but about two songs from Show Your Bones, but I had zero problems with all of the songs played. They seemed a lot more upbeat, fast and fun than the studio tracks. I can't say it was worth the twenty five dollar ticket charge, but I am very glad I got a chance to see them. It's been quite a few years since I've started listening to them and this was their first time in Florida since then. Sitting through both of the opening bands, along with waiting forty minutes for YYY to come out, was very unnecessary. After their fifty five minute set, the stage goons started unplugging things and rounding up wires. So I figured they were done and we wouldn't be getting an encore and headed home.
