She could be forgiven for not paying attention to such things. She didn't have a birthday of her own; at least, one that she knew about. When he was younger, he used to try to isolate himself from everyone on his birthday. He thought about his family, even though he normally tried not to, and the pain was enough to swallow him up.
Inevitably, though, she would come find him, chastize him for sulking, and make him do something with her. Inevitably... he would start to have fun.
Those days were long past, and now, he could only remember the month in which he was born, not the date. If he tried to remember his family, he could only come up with a vague sense of what his mother smelled like, and it elicited no emotional reaction at all.
He spent his birthday... or his birthmonth, at any rate, at Saya's side, his hand on her cocoon, waiting for her to revive.
