Kevin wasn’t sure why he bought the old cabin. A boyhood dream he supposed; something he always had promised himself he would do once he was financially able. He’d asked his boyfriend to meet him at the cabin - the perfect hideaway for the struggling actor, consumed with keeping his personal life away from the press. The conversation started much as it always did. When it came to late night private rendezvous, he almost always had time for Kevin. But meeting his family, friends, leaving the house, were other matters altogether. All of these were out of the question for the hunky heartthrob, though he consistently denied it, convincing Kevin that this was the norm for celebrities and one day it would all be worthwhile.

“Um, Kev; about the weekend trip to the cabin? I have an early morning meeting on Saturday. A casting call I can’t pass up on. You understand these things don’t you?”

“Of course I do Chad. There’s no one that understands work commitments better than I do. You know that. But I'd been planning this for weeks now. I thought it would be perfect since you value your privacy....It's quiet, out of the way...." Kevin paused seeing he was getting nowhere trying to appeal to Chad and sighed, “Look, I’m not looking for a commitment or anything, but what are we doing here? Are you ashamed to be seen with me? We don't even go out as friends...."

“Kev, honey. Give me a break. I just need to be careful, that’s all - and the interview - it’s not an excuse, it’s legit. Call my agent if you don’t believe me.”

Kevin looked at Chad in disappointment. There was no point verifying the appointment with the agent. It was no doubt scheduled. That was half the problem. There was always something on Chad’s schedule. Something more important than him, it would seem. “Look, you head off to the cabin. I’ll meet you there. It’ll give you a chance to check the property, light a cozy fire, and I’ll be there before you know it - Promise,” said Chad pulling Kevin close and winning him over with a charismatic smile and soft kiss.

Kevin wasn’t sure why he trusted the man. Sure, he possessed charm in spades, was handsome and even quite nice, but he wasn’t boyfriend material, and likely never would be. How many broken promises would it take before he’d face that reality? Giving his hunky bed-buddy the benefit of the doubt, Kevin packed for the weekend getaway, and left the next morning hoping for the best, while expecting the worst.

The cabin was a cozy one-bedroom post and beam where you could smell cedar as soon as you stepped through the door. The bathroom contained a jetted tub for romantic baths, and a stone fire place was the focal point of the living area. A four poster bed begging for some action was one of the few pieces of furniture in the loft space overlooking the living area below.

Kevin busied himself preparing for the romantic evening ahead by stocking the cupboards and fridge, setting champagne out to chill, taking out the makings for a filet dinner and cleaning out and lighting the fire place. Hopefully, a cabin deep in the woods, would be the privacy Chad would need to finally open up to Kevin. He imagined them finally able to go for a walk, sit on the front deck and watch deer graze, overlook the water from the upper deck, or use the outdoor hot tub to unwind at the end of the day.

Sadly, Kevin’s hopes for the romantic weekend came crashing to an end when the anticipated phone call turned into the dreaded one. “Kevin, look, I know I promised I’d be there, but I was invited to dinner. It’s an offer I couldn’t turn down.” “Dinner?” repeated Kevin, not quite believing the excuse he’d gotten this time. “Kev, you know I wouldn’t cancel on you, if I didn’t think this was important. I’ll make it up to you sweety, I promise.” Kevin was livid, but afraid to complain for fear of losing the man. He wasn’t sure when he’d changed. When he’d decided to give up on his hopes and dreams, make no demands, request no compromises. He simply took what Chad was willing to give, nothing more - and he was miserable for it. Taking a deep breath and drumming up the courage, Kevin started, - “Chad, this was important to me. I really wanted to spend time with you this weekend. We need this…” But mastering the art of diffusing Kevin’s temper, and getting what he wanted, Chad interrupted the thought, charming the man who would never have allowed himself to be charmed by another. “Why don’t you take care of the repairs to the deck you’d mentioned a few days ago? When you get back, I’ll show you the time of your life,” said Chad in a sexy purr. “Sure,” Kevin responded with a sigh. “Can’t wait.”

“Well, he did it again,” said Kevin into his cell phone. “No! He didn’t cancel, did he??” asked Sarah in disbelief. “What was his excuse this time? Let me guess, he thinks paparazzi will follow him to the cabin?” volunteered Kevin’s oldest sister sarcastically. “Nope. Dinner. He wants to network with some agents that are in town. I mean it is a good opportunity.” “Stop it this second Kevin!” “Stop what?” he replied not knowing what his sister was inferring. “Look Kevin, Chad's a nice guy. I give him that. But stop making excuses for him. He makes enough on his own. He’s not what you need. He’s not what you want. You only think you want him, because he’s handsome and charming, and famous…” “Uggh. You’re not putting up a good argument for the ‘he’s not what I want’ column,” Kevin mumbled sarcastically. “Well what I mean is, I know you Kev, and one day you’ll realize you want more than what he’s offering.” “I don’t need anything more. Not really. I’m just looking for a bit of company, someone who makes me happy. That’s all.” “Well, when did that happen?” asked his sister. “When did what happen?” “When did you lower your standards this low? You’ve been out of the closet for almost two decades; and now you’re just going to settle for this little secret……fling?” “Well, you’re a fine one to talk!” Kevin lashed out, knowing his sister's failed attempts with relationships included more than a few one night stands. “I’m the perfect person to talk Kevin! Sure, things haven’t gone so well for me. You’re absolutely right about that. But that’s exactly what makes me the expert on failed relationships, and what you have with Chad is a failed relationship in the making!” Kevin sighed. “Fine. You might be right. I’m just not ready to accept it yet.” “So are you coming home then?” Sarah asked trying to change the subject. “We’re having a family dinner tomorrow…” “No, Chad suggested I take care of some deck repairs. It’s not what I wanted to spend my time on, but at least it'll be time well spent. Look, thanks for listening and for your 'advice'." Kevin air quoted as he spoke into his bluetooth. "I’ll think about it, but I better get going if I’m gonna find a repairman today.” “Well, at least let me help you with that. I know a guy. He’s good. He’s cheap. And I’m pretty sure he’s available….” “Give me his number, I’ll give him a call,” replied Kevin. “I’ll have to look it up. Look, I’ll give him a call and get back to you, ok?” said Sarah before hanging up the phone.

Later that evening, Kevin was drinking a glass of wine on the bedroom deck when he heard a banging sound on the door. It was getting late. The sun was about to set, and he wasn’t expecting company. Maybe Chad had had a change of heart he hoped as he ran down the stairs excitedly and swung open the front door.

"You look pretty happy to see me," said his visitor with a smile.  “What on earth are you doing here?” Kevin replied to the intruder. “Your sister sent me, she said you had an emergency??” “I’d hardly call deck repairs a crisis,” murmured Kevin, getting in a long eyeful of his ex. He wasn’t sure why he’d broken things off with Scotty. It was all a silly misunderstanding if he could even remember the murky details correctly. Something he’d said that he didn’t really mean. He’d taken him for granted, much the same  as his current boyfriend was taking him for granted now.

Scotty was dressed in a fitted Henley, worn jeans, and heavy boots. He wore a carpenter belt, with various tools, leather workmen’s gloves and carried a crowbar in one hand and a tool box in the other. “Whattaya need?” “I need a lot of things, but the deck repairs are this way,” muttered Kevin, leading Scotty to the edge of the front deck where several boards were cracked and weathered.

Scotty checked all the boards individually; checking to see if they were loose and identifiying which ones required replacement. Kevin just openly stared at the gorgeous man on all fours, wondering how he'd missed that Scotty had skills in the area - something that his sister apparently was privy to. “Checking me out?” asked Scotty turning to glance in Kevin’s direction. “No, no. Just um….. supervising. Carry on. I’ll see if I can’t find us drinks or something....,” Kevin responded, embarrassed that his ex had notice his unabashed drooling. He returned a few minutes later with a tall pitcher of iced tea, and poured Scotty the cold drink.

“So what’s the prognosis?” asked Kevin a while later, trying to make casual conversation. He made a mental note of getting back at Sarah. She no doubt knew the little prank would cause havoc on his current relationship and an uncomfortable conversation for him at the cabin.  Then again - she seemed to know him better than he knew himself, he admitted as he licked his lips and fantasized about his old flame….

“Well, I was able to easily repair the wear on a couple of the boards, but two of them will need to be replaced. It shouldn’t take more than a couple more hours, except…”

“Except what?” asked Kevin. “Well, the local hardware store is closed and I’ll be needing some supplies. I suppose I can come back in the morning.” It was dusk, only a couple hours until it was pitch black outside.  Scotty still hadn’t taken a break, washed up or even eaten, Kevin reasoned to himself, as he stared at the beads of sweat dripping from his exes brow and the shirt that was now plastered to his firm abs.  “Don’t be ridiculous Scotty. That’s a six hour drive. Just - just stay.....”

“Stay? The night?” Scotty repeated quietly as he looked intently into Kevin’s eyes. “Does that mean you want to have sex?” flirted Scotty.
“No of course not!” answered Kevin vehemently. Of course he wanted sex with his ex. 1. Scotty was hot. 2. Things weren’t going well with Chad. 3. Scotty was hot. “I meant you could wash up, eat, and sleep on the couch,” Kevin mumbled. “I’m in a relationship,” said Kevin by way of explanation as he let Scotty into the cabin and showed him to the only shower, adjacent to the bedroom loft. He handed Scotty a couple of clean towels and took out extra linens for him to use downstairs. “That’s not what Sarah says,” said Scotty with a wink and a smile as he removed his tool belt and peeled off his shirt in front of Kevin. “What? What did she say??” asked Kevin as Scotty closed the bathroom door. “What did she tell you?” Kevin yelled through the door. “That you’re dating around, but nothing serious,” said Scotty before he turned the water faucet on. "Hey, do you have clean clothes I can borrow? I'm sure you don't want me sleeping in the buff," yelled Scotty over the sound of the water. Kevin leaned against the bathroom door as he listened to the water falling to the tiles below and envisioned the sight to be seen beyond the door. “Family!” he muttered with annoyance thinking of Sarah. It seemed their only purpose was to torture you, or prove you wrong - and he wasn’t quite sure which category the events of the night fell in. Kevin left a change of clothes on a chair by the bathroom door and busied himself in the kitchen, trying his hardest not to envision a naked Scotty wandering around the room above.

Later that night, after cooking and catching up over dinner, the men sat on the bedroom deck drinking the last of the bottle of champagne. ‘No sense in it going to waste,’ Kevin had said offering another glass of the bubbly to Scotty. “You deserve better,” said Scotty, after patiently listening to Kevin’s woes. Kevin looked over at Scotty realizing that this was exactly the weekend he’d envisioned. Quiet, romantic, and with someone who he cared about, who cared as much for him - someone who appreciated him. He shook off the feeling, wondering if he was being influenced by the champagne, or simply imprisoned by the proximity of the delectable man with the sweet smile and kind eyes. He should have never tempted himself by asking Scotty to stay, yet he now knew that he didn’t want him to leave. He needed Scotty somehow. The men quietly sat in their lounge chairs, each waiting for the other to break the silence.

“You’re not even into me anymore and I’m still managing to have a wonderful time. Why would anyone in their right mind turn this down? It’s been a beautiful evening,” Scotty finally said softly as he took another sip of the champagne. Kevin didn’t respond to the compliment, but appreciated the sentiments nonetheless. “One of the things I love about coming here is looking out from this deck. In the morning, you can just relax looking out at the water. In the evenings you can look at the stars.  There’s the milky way,” said Kevin pointing to a grouping of stars. “And if you look through the telescope you can see Venus right about there”, said Kevin pointing in its direction. “It’s the morning star, you can see it in the east, right before sunrise.” “Too bad I won’t be able to see it from the couch,” said Scotty as he wistfully looked at Kevin.

“We might need to do something about that,” said Kevin as he looked over at Scotty. Kevin leaned close to Scotty staring at his lips longingly while he contemplated the choice he was about to make. “Is something wrong?” whispered Scotty, so close to Kevin’s lips that he could feel his breathing. “For the first time in a long while, nothing at all,” whispered Kevin as he pulled Scotty closer….
