I know I haven't written in forever (or at least it seems like forever?) so I guess there is a bit to say. I've been working 9-5 in DC for a month now and I've kind of settled into it. I might even like it if I didn't have about a 1.5 hour commute each way. The people I work with are really cool, most of our office are either other interns or junior staff and even the senior staff are really down to earth and personable. And there are always cool things to go to, like conferences, speeches, and such. I have been completely slacking on my museum-going though. I've only been to one in the month I've been here, the Renwick Gallery (sort of handicrafts? it's the closest one to where I work).
Life actually in DC has been relatively good, but my aunt's house in Brookeville, MD is, to put it mildly, a quite a bit uncomfortable. My aunt is a pack-rat, so the house is really cluttered and they're taking forever to move in, the have something like 6 dogs? and one should have died a month ago (yesterday she ate her own shit...), my aunt is WAY controlling and micromanages all aspect of the house (and not very well)... I could go on. I talked to my dad on the phone today and I really want to tell him about how things are and what has been going on but, regardless of whether that would be a good idea, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. She is his big sister and she is perfect (to him) and I can't bring myself to spoil that image.
And Heidi has had the opportunity to escape the hell and move into the city, and now she's being punished for it. I'm pretty sure that my aunt is upset with her for moving out. They're not really speaking to each other right now. But fortunately they don't have to see each other for a little while. It's just really interesting how conditional love is on my dad's side of the family in general. I think my grandma is the only one that is really at all willing to forgive anyone just because they're family.
Hmm.
And on a sidenote, I start a new job tomorrow. I finally got a PAID job with Howard County Parks and rec (another job I didn't apply for, what?). They're conducting a study of the effect of deer overpopulation on birds, so they're measuring insect population. So basically, I get to wandering through the woods with a really cool middle-age woman and 4 guys (who I haven't met yet), collecting bugs and classifying them. Sounds like a good time to me. No, really it does. I will get to be outside 3 days a week and continue my internship in DC at NCSE 2 days a week. AND now that my sister has a place in the city, I have a more convenient place to crash. I even have a closet to store some clothes in, so I don't have to carry everything I need with me all of the time (in a way, going into DC reminds me of backpacking through Europe).
Thank GOD for change that is in a positive direction.
