Zegapain

I thought I had finally given up on this place, but no way. The moment I found an interesting series, my little fangirl woke up, and I realized I need to write about it! Typos and all~ I'll be checking those whenever I see one in the future, haha~

So, ZEGAPAIN. it has supposedly been around since year 2006, why hasn't anyone recommended it to me yet? Oh well, my mecha-loving friends are few and far away, I guess, or only go for Gundam ♥ Truth is, I'd like to be surfing Ebay right now, trying to find figurines. The mechas in this series are definitely pretty, but they don't really hold candle to Gundams. I think very rare mechas do. Also the main course, that is, the story, has nice twists every now and then - no, try all the time ^_^'. It seems like the plot stands on one twist after another.

It can get tiring.

Oh, that's righ, this series has sovinistic qualities! I'm serious! There are only about five guys that show their face regularly, and seven women, who all have a reserved back seat in the mechas. The person piloting the Zegapain and taking care of shooting, is called Gunner, amd is ALWAYS a man. The one handling the "rear seat" is called Wizard, and is ALWAYS a woman. The Gunner never changes, but the Wizard does, almost all the time.

Supposedly it doesn't matter that the roles are fixed. I'm just expecting the time when a fan writes fanfiction about a Female Gunner. Then again, the truth is, there is ABSOLUTELY NONE. No fanfiction about this series at all. None I could find.

I'm not good in reviewing - ANYTHING, so I'll start on the real ramble now. Because I'm unable to keep it spoiler-free

Okay, so, very long time ago Jinrui - no sorry - mankind has seized to exist. Lovely, is it not? I actually mean it, not a single human being is alive on Earth. But, here's the catch, they live as data inside a quantum computer servers! Not that they remember any of the Apocalypse, they repeat the same three or five month cycle inside the servers. They just forget. Forget, forget, forget.

Celebrants don't ^_^ They are data-people who have come to realize they are data-people. They also have found a way out of the servers, even if they need to return inside one in cycles, because, very simply put, data isn't forever.

That's the setting, where it all starts. Now what's next? Ah, right, because this is a mecha series, we need a conflict, because everybody knows there's no use for mecha if there's no one to fight. In this case, the enemy is called Garusorm (Gards-orm). As the series goes on, it becomes clear, the Garusorm is a system upheld by NAGA, the very person who when humankind still lived created the quantum computer and preached about eternal life. He's also responsible for wiping out the humankind with a super virus, with 98 % death rate. Those who survived escaped into the servers.

I must remind you people of my very bad memory for facts. I remember the percentage had an 8 in it, and it was frighteningly high. Almost no one survived.

The main protagonist is Sogoru Kyo. He's also the reason I kept watching the series after I was confused with the fast pace it paddled forward. It skipped so much information I would've liked to have, but I'll watch it again after the Cosplay season. Until then I'm going to be busy. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW THE REASON I LIKE SOGORU KYO?! Do you? If not I'm going to tell you!

He's a redhead.

An honest redhead!

!!!!!!!!!!!

From this everyone will understand I'm weak against red hair yes? Haha. So, Sogoru Kyo is Sogoru Kyo from the Swim Club, he likes swimming. He also is an amazing pilot the first time he does it! It's almost like he's done it before... and guess what? HE HAS! Of course he's reckless as he doesn't remember anything, but he masters Zega-Altair so fast it's almost like it's in a blink of an eye! He's so cool! But it's kinda annoying.

But surprisingly it wasn't the protagonist that stole the show with his red hair, even if he was the only red haired person in the series. I'm NOT counting the pink-haired Chinese twins, grrrr (have nothing against them, I just don't accept pink as red, sorry!). The heartbreaker was someone whose VOICE did me in. Romi Park, I loooooove you~ I need to tell you guys there are a lot more great voices in this series. I never heard the Student Council Vice Commander Minato's voice before, but it's really different, very Not fitting, very... amazing, really. It was one of the things I also came to love when the series progressed. You see, the girls in mecha series don't have that sort of real angel voice. I actually checked, it seems I have heard her voice before, I just didn't connect it. Still don't. Strange, and I'm usually pretty good in this!

Oh right, voice fangirl took over. So, Romi Park-sama does the voice of a very sweet silver-haired, green-eyed bishonen in Zegapain. His name is, please read this out loud to yourselves! Lu Sheng Mao~ Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! I mean, he has the voice of a goddess, looks of a fairy and name of an angel! Oooh, be still my heart ♥ He pilots Zega-Garuda, a purple Zegapain and - SPOILER!!! - is somewhat in love with Sogoru Kyo *muah!*

I won't really go further into the plot, since spoiling the whole thing isn't fun at all. Sogoru Kyo has trouble all through the series with "not being alive" and "not being able to touch things in the real world", his favourite phrase, which he repeats a lot, and I mean A LOT, is: "It's IMPOSSIBLE!" "ARIENEE!" He doesn't accept, he just doesn't accept, he's going to do everything to make everything okay, blah blah, it gets old after a while, but he's such a sweet (red-haired!) protagonist, that I forgive him anything. Because he's a good guy. A really good guy. I like good guys.

I must warn you guys. The ending gives no answers. It's just an episode made to end the series. I suppose it had too little viewers or something? I think it's sad. It started fast, jump over details and ended with even less details. No one dies, everyone gets a happy ending, BORING. I think the journey to the end, is what makes this series so watchable. And because I spoiled everything, this whole review is going under a cut with big spoiler warnings.

No wait, one person dies, but not really, I think. Maybe he does. Who knows.

This might also be the first series where they don't really have a set ending theme, that I know at least. I mean, usually there's one song until a certain point, and then they may change it, but in Zegapain, they sort of drift between three songs without having a care in the world. They're all sweet songs, yeah. I like And you the best. It reminds me of some Western song, Beatles or something.

I'm not happy about some things in the series. At some point they forgot to use water as a medium when they jumped from one place to another, usually from the server to the Oceanus, which is the Celebrum's ship. I understand it was probably there in the beginning for Kyo to register the change of place, but no one ever explained it. Also, the make humans be close to God in what they can do. I'm religious, but not so religious that That would be my biggest concern, just that it was a too happy ending. Too cliché. Too budject saving one. Geh. When creating anime, please let dead people stay dead. Otherwise no one will appreciate the sacrifices. Or at least, not as much.

Sogoru Kyo and Lu Sheng Mao ♥ The Oceanus' original Gunners.
