15 book meme

Ganked from Mis_T and Droxy, tracked back to Somigliana and Subversa (thoughts ahead BTW) where I found the
Rules:
Don't take too long to think about this.
List 15 books you've read that will always stick with you. These aren't necessarily your favorite books--they're the ones that haunt you, the ones that you just can't forget, the ones that--for good or bad--have become a part of your psyche. They should be the first 15 you can recall in no more than 15 minutes.

1. Primo Levi, The Wrench - my everyday life, my neighbour, my pride, my bones.
2. Primo Levi, If this is a man: unspeakable poetry in the cleanest, clinically accurate report from Hell
3. Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin saga: my travelling companions
4. Frances H. Burnett, A Little Princess: it gave me the taste for 19th Cty social novels: Dickens, Balzac and especially
5. Emile Zola, Au Bonheur des Dames (though I like most of the Rougon-Macquart series...)
6. John Steinbeck, East of Eden: I came across an abridged version as a kid, and was absolutely gobsmacked. Understood next to zero, but the Bible concepts it carried were not strangers, and they fascinated me. Kept  rereading from time to time over the years, and each time I grasped a little bit more. It's linked with my steps into adulthood.
7. Alessandro Manzoni, I Promessi Sposi: that's where I come from, more or less...
8. Simone De Beauvoir, Mémoires d'une jeune fille bien rangée (soooo similar to myself, apart from the different outcome)
9. A.+S. Golon, the Angélique series: my first take on romance. The heroine is frankly over the top (too beautiful, too clever, too intelligent) but it has all the ingredients I cherish: detailed historical background, courage, a tall, dark and intelligent hero. And the second part recreates one of my oldest fantasies: to live in a sort of refuge with all my friends and beloved ones, working hard and sharing tasks to survive some hardship. I don't know where it comes from. Perhaps from my childhood holidays on the mountain. Seems like I've always had it.
10. Basile G. Lo cunto de li cunti (and many other beloved collections of myths and legends)
11. Austen, Persuasion. Sense and Sensibility. All her novels, actually.
12. Goldoni, The Plays: my first attempt at fanfic, around 15,  was based on one of his Venetian leading characters, whom I threw in a Risorgimento war setting (I wish I could find my script...)
13. J. Swift, Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal
14. B.Brecht, German War Primer, Mother Courage, Galileo
15. D. Keyes, Flowers For Algernon
