Spot Check for Shitty Writing
A Response to the Lead Story from Kiss Machine Version 8.0 (an Otherwise Fine Magazine) and Plenty of Other Student Writing I've Encountered in My Three Years at Columbia College of Chicago and in Other Magazines
  • Assign your lit/psych/writing major to your narrator
  • Reference a "japanese noise band" to give your scene a sound, one of only two or three sensory details in as many pages
  • Passive voice
  • Make every character as self-involved and socially inept as you are [i.e. "speaking in silence"]
  • Reference other writing without any clear purpose
  • Write about something exceptionally boring -- add drugs
  • Introduce a new character at the end of your story without any clear purpose
  • More passive voice
Feel free to add more.
