If you've known me for a long period of time, you know that I generally hate The Beatles with fervor. I despise the fact that American popular culture has pushed many people to pretend that they are in love with a band whose music they'd never listen to on their own accord. Thankfully, commercials and movies give these people the rudimentary knowledge of Beatles music they need to get by.
After my wilderness excursion this week (i.e., Outdoor Action) I've begun to rethink The Beatles. Two guys in my group really -- I mean, really -- liked The Beatles. The enthusiasm they displayed for the band's music was genuine, and extended beyond the OMG-I-know-the-phrase-'I-want-to-hold-your-hand!'-but-that's-about-it pseudo-fandom I see most of the time. As we hiked several miles a day they sang all sorts of Beatles songs, many of which actually sounded pretty good.
Their actions have led me to embark on a personal challenge. As of now, I will attempt to listen to the entire discography of Beatles albums. That's not necessarily counting B-sides, live albums, and things like that, but I will listen to all of the studio albums if I can help it. At the end, I'll reassess my attitude about The Beatles, their music, and its impact on today's culture (and whether or not they deserve the hype they still receive).
That is all.
