The end of an (aff)era

As we all know, Governor Sanford mysteriously took a wrong turn on the Appalachian Trail, ended up in Argentina, and cheated on his wife. And, like most people I know, I was happy to hear that he was finally resigning from the governorship. I too had my laugh when I heard the news. After a while though, I did begin to feel a little sorry for him. I realized that as much as most of us dislike him, I think I'd rather have seen him finish his two years as the stubborn idiot we know (but didn't love) than to see him collapse under the weight of a personal mistake. Though we may have our fun jeering about how stupid he has shown himself to be, I think we should remember that he's only human. He makes mistakes too (Lord knows he does), but just because he wasn't the best leader ever doesn't mean that we should revel in his misfortunes. If he suffers, the whole state suffers. I do feel sorry for him and his family, and I hope that Governor Barbour will do the best job he can. God knows South Carolina needs all the help it can get, especially after this turn of events. All we can do for his point is pray for him, if you're into that sort of thing.
