And I was thinking about religion and my personal beliefs. Last year I would say that I'm agnostic. But now I am more of an atheist. Maybe I should do some research to figure it out. But what would that really accomplish? I know what I am and what I believe, so would a name really be all that helpful ( Read more... )

how can one be "more of an atheist"? Atheism & Thesim both require a clear belief about the existensce of "[Gg]od".

atheist: one who believes that there is no deity

theism: belief in the existence of a god or gods; specifically : belief in the existence of one God viewed as the creative source of man and the world who transcends yet is immanent in the world

agnostic: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and prob. unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god

So generally speaking we can say that being atheist is no different from being a theist: both require the certainty of their beliefs. The agnostic on the other hand does not require any certainty on the nature of reality/[Gg]od.

and what would it really accomplish to get the labels straight? the ability to commnicate with others, knowing what you believe is one thing but to interact with others one needs shared language. :)

back to lounging around ;)

Ill try to be a little more precise with my thoughts. I flip between 'there is/are no deity/deities' and 'its arrogant to assume that w/our limited cognition'. Basically I like the firm stance of atheism and the flexibility of agnosticism.

And your right about communication. Its been so long that someone inquired about my beliefs that I forgot how to communicate them.

you know I've heard the agnostic stance described in terms of flexibily and fence sitting. I'll also confess to having believed that at one point in time ( ... )
