i saw your post at t_shirt_surgery and i just wanted to tell you, as an aspiring fashion designer, you really inspired me to actually get off my lazy ass and put my sewing machine i bought 2 years ago to good use already. thanks for that. you are beyond awesome!
i am now even considering taking FACS@york after learning about it from you! i recently completed a 1 year art fundamentals program, which i initially hoped to catapult me into the YSDN@york, but after some setbacks i am forced to restrategize. anyway, sorry i practically told you my memoirs here haha.
you're website is the coolest thing in the world, the payphone hipsterdate experiment was especially fantastic (& hilarious lol).
i sincerely hope you win the urban renewal contest!
ps. oh, and i hope you don't mind, i added you as a friend! pps. i can't get the gladiator sandals you are wearing here>> http://wiredminds.ca/mari/urbn/jessdetail.jpg out of my mind. please spare me my misery and tell me where i can get my hands on them!
I'm so happy to hear that i've inspired you! that's the greatest compliment I can get, really. Isn't hipsterdate hilarious? It was the funnest thing to do, some of the callers we got were really amazing. I dont know what happened to the audio, we used to have it up there but i guess free players have their limits.
Re: Urban renewal, great news, they've been in contact with me and I going to be involved in their next artist/designer customised project, so some of my pieces will be available in select urbn stores sometime in the holidays. yay!! i'm so stoked.
As for FACS, ummmm.. hmm. I'm not so sure I would advise anyone to go that route. I don't think i quite "enjoyed" the theory aspect of it, however, I did learn quite a bit from the multimedia stream. If you do decide on it, try to get into all the classes with Don Sinclair, he is fabulous and you will learn a lot from him, if you enjoy all things multimedia. Nadine Wettlaufer is great too cos she's super thorough. The thing with FACS is that, well, it's not a very popular program, hence all the courses are available to non-majors...which isn't too great. It isn't an elitist thing at all, but when you are in upper year courses there isn't much room for progression when everyone in the class is at different levels; some people being beginners and others who have taken all the prerequisites and expect to learn more, end up in a fourth year that feels like a first year. It just doesn't feel right, especially with all the cash you're putting in towards tuition. whew. sorry about that novel rant. The good thing about FACS though, is that youre open to taking a LOT of electives, which I enjoyed because I got to dabble in different things. The thing is, after I went this route, I didn't exactly feel like I was "good enough" in anything, which i'm pretty disappointed at. If you DO want to take your master's though, FACS is a good route because it allows different options. YSDN, on the other hand, I think is more practical..but it is an extremely demanding course. My friends are constant complainers about how much work is put upon them, but then again, the programme churns out amazing designers. Haha, im going on and on, aren't I? But I really do think it's important for you to make the right decision about it, cos it really is a commitment, whatever programme you choose.
And for the question you're probably dying to hear the answer to.. the sandals. Haha, they're fabulous arent they? They are super comfy too, and they come in silver as well. So, since I am sure that you will divulge to me in the future any fashion finds of yours that i can't get out of my head, i'll tell you where i got 'em. :) They were from a store in Chinatown, on Spadina, north of Queen. I forget what it is called, but they're there!
Anyway, sorry for the novel. I'm adding you back. Im a whore for mka too.
PS I forgot to mention this, but next next september, my prof was telling me that they were going to offer a new program at york that joins FACS and computer science... that sounds like a dream program to me, with creativity + practicality, so if that's ever an option for you!
wow thank you soo much. you're super super helpful with all this info! i'm still undecided but it's always good to get 2 cents from people with first hand experiences.
and that's freeeeakin amazing! seriously?! you just skipped like 10 steps of walking over/slaving for people as a fashion designer. i hope you get compensated well because they sure hike their prices at urban. i will def. be looking out for it!
ahahah for the sandals, you totally got me. more specific pretty pleease? is it near the dragon centre thing across from td bank. or where is it beside. i think i'm gonna need to bring my chinese friend with me, last time i tried to find something in pacific mall alone i went home with a haircut i did not want lol.
oh man. i know what you mean about haircuts that make you want to cry at chinese malls. it's really scary when you say something and then they nod, so you assume they understand, but really...not. That's happened to me a couple of times. I should really learn by now but i'm lured in by the low prices and the cute pictures, and all the other happy looking customers who are probably happy because of the no communication barrier thing.
Hmm, it's not by dragon centre, its more close to the other mall, the Chinatown centre. But closer to Chinatown Centre than the Dragon Centre, closer to Queen than Dundas. I really do forget the name of the store though, I think it's a Chinese name (if that helps any!) In Shoes though, is closer to dragon centre, and they've got pretty decent selection sometimes too.
Compensation isn't much to brag about, but the exposure is what i'm really excited about! yay!
