I'm going to look back on this as some of the best times - I bet

Last night was fun.

JH had his masters recital last night. It was freakin cool. And he did some really hard songs. Like a version of an old standard "have you met miss jones?" that made me wonder if miss jones was perhaps a bit spastic - even epileptic, yet brilliant. Or how about try on some really hard Chick Corea for size (http://www.myspace.com/stretchrecords)? Man, tough stuff. It was great. As expected. Then we had a meal at the Greenhouse. That was the secret reason for actually attending the recital.

Then, I went to see my 2 favourite Denton bands - oso closo (who has new audio from their upcoming album up - it rules check it out - http://www.myspace.com/osocloso) and snarky puppy (http://sitmom.com). Snarky Puppy was having their CD release party (only $15 by mail folks, trust me it's awesome). Both bands were in fine form. Lots of friends in attendance. I got all tingly hanging out with these cool people, sharing lots of injokes and general frivolity while hearing incredible musicianship from friends I play with all the time. All I have to say is, man can Clay Pritchard (young phenom & snarker) play tenor saxophone. Geez.

Speaking of which, some of those folks are playing with me tonight under my "leadership" (loosely used) at an artsy-collective-type-coffeehouse called art6. Then, next week I play with a similar group at the afore-mentioned Greenhouse.

Lately, we've begun work in the Zebras on a Kool & the Gang tune called "open sesame" that features arabic scales over a disco beat with me growling out phrases like "abracadraba!" and "groove with the genie!". Yes, I do that in school.

But the 6oclock has been a bit behind in preparing for their performance next week. I've been in authoritative "get your act together" mode recently. 3 charts sound really rough right now, which is a bit worrying. I can't learn the parts for them, however.

Otherwise, things are generally looking up. I've got lots to do though. Practicing for one thing. Lunch, for another.
