it's hot.
i have never watched so many star trek episodes in my life.
tomorrow is sunday and i am quite ecstatic that i get to go home and see my cat.
i have learned from this trip that i need to live in the hustle and bustle of a city.  i wonder if that means if UC Berkeley is more for me because of San Francisco, or if UCLA is more for me because ( Read more... )

hahah don't even worry about it!! I'm happy to answer these questions for you.

first about the UCLA Psych thing... I don't really know what the deal is at UCLA but what I do know is that at Cal you still have to declare your major after you get in. For instance, I applied as a chem major to the college of letters and science and then i freaked out and realized i don't want to do chem and now i'm tryiing to be a cognitive science major and working on the prereqs for that before I declare. so ummm that's how that works. Some majors here are impacted... like psychology so they're more competative but I don't know how much that will effect you. At my orientation I expressed interest in a highly impacted major (public health) and everyone I talked to discouraged me from doing that, it was shitty. don't listen to people who tell you no!!!! you can do anything if you try!!!

I live on campus, last semester I lived in the dorms and then was like "fuck this i want a kitchen" and now i live in university owned apartments. It's kind of hard to find apartments because it's competative but it's not impossible. You might end up living farther from campus than you'd like but the buses aren't too bad. A lot of buildings here are old though so be on the look out for that. My friend tried to bring her cat up here and it turned into too much of a pain in the butt. Most people don't have pets but I'm sure you can find a way around keeping your kitty.

People make a big deal about what side of campus you live on because it's kind of stereotyped. I live on the south side, which is known for being more social as a lot of the dorms are here and the frats & sororites are to. I live near Telegraph and People's Park, and those things get sketchy, so southside is also a little sketchy. North side is known for being "quieter" and less social because it's close to the engineering buildings but there are also some really fun crazy co-op parties over there. I don't really hang out on north side very much though so I don't know.. wow that was a pointless thing to tell you about.

I don't know if it's very difficult to get a job here, but I have a lot of friends that work. If you're on financial aid and stuff you can apply for a work study job, but yeah you should be able to get a job if you need one.

there are parties but it also gets rather low-key here because school is hard. There are frat parties if you're into that, but I don't really go to those so I don't know much about them... I've only been to one. hahah The co-ops have crazy parties too but you have to know someone that lives there to get in I think? There are also house parties, which are my favorite. Plus you can always go into the city for concerts and stuff!

I didn't bring my car but I kind of wish I did. Parking is a bitch and Berkeley is just outside of Oakland so don't forget that berkeley gets kind of rough sometimes. People's cars get broken into. I still wish i had mine with me though, it helps.

going to Cal has been a great experience and I really enjoy it. I miss LA sometimes but I'm glad i'm here because I think if i went to UCLA I wouldn't be as involved in the experience of going there as I am here at berkeley.

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions please dont' hesitate to ask.

btw my roommate is a mass comm major if you have questions about that I can ask her for you?

hi roxy! thanks again for doing this. i really appreciate your input!!!

So for Cal, when do you declare your major? Right when you get in? Or after you take a few of the beginning courses? My first choice is Mass Communications, that is why I am kind of thrown off that I got Psych for UCLA. I am leaning towards Berkeley right now.

I was thinking about the university owned apts too. i bet those are hard to get into though. but I think that would be the most viable idea...so i can get used to the school and area before i move out into the city/surrounding areas. haha, we could be neighbors. the university owned apts are no pets, right?

The southside def sounds more appealing. While i like quietness, i would prefer a choice to go to a party or something. thanks for giving me the tip about south vs. north. haha. did you learn that before you went there?

one thing I am most apprehensive about is the smart people. haha. i don't think i have the intelligence of the average berkeley student...so i am scared it will be too hard for me. where as UCLA is more of my level. I know that is something to be scared about, haha. are most of your classes on a curve?

I would loveeeeeeee to talk to you roommate about mass comm. it's finals week though, right? i don't want to bother you two too much since you have to study! but when you have time, send me an IM on coupon papercuts

i think my big thing is the whole having to declare the major again. what if i choose berkeley but i don't get into mass comm?!??! ahhhh.

but enough of my problems...how are you doing? are you going to see your bf a lot this summer?
