NAS Qnap RAID recovery procedure after power fail

May 19, 2012 12:16

Yes, even UPS is not a panacea for power failures. NAS QNAP TS-419P+ (and many other Qnap servers, accordingly to reports over the web) suffer of RAID5 reassembly problem after non-graceful power cycle. Following message appears in server's log:

[RAID5 Disk Volume: Drive 1 2 3 4] The file system is not clean. It is suggested that you run "check disk".

There are reports that firmware 3.6.1 Build0302T solves the problem. However, there is a risk of lost of all data on the server due to firmware upgrade. The issue can be solved without upgrades.

1. Log on to the server via browser.
2. Ensure the error message appears in the log. (System administration -> System logs -> System Events logs).
3. Disable RAID locking services (Everything enabled in Application Servers folder.) Web File Manager can be enabled. SMB daemon is not an issue as well.
4. Ensure services disabled in the log.
5. Restart the server (System administration -> Power management -> Restart). NOTICE: if NAS was powered long time with "The file system is not clean" error, many zombie processes can be held in OS. In this case graceful power off can take looooooong time: minutes and even hours. Periodically check system log looking for message "System started". If message doesn't appears, the server is not restarted yet.
6. After server boots normally, error message won't appear in the log. Start/Enable the disabled services (those you disabled in step 3). Hint: do not start all services at time. Download station and Twonky Media (and some plugins) take a lot of resources to load. Give them time.

HTH.
