In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.
This prompt is a little ill-timed since I did a recs post a couple days ago, but here are a few stories from 2011 that stuck with me and that I think deserve more comments than they have.
A Lifetime and a Half by
thinlizzy2 - George Weasley, gen
Never mind what parts he has; George Weasley was born a girl. Transfic is hard to find, and this is an outstanding example. I loved the way this story followed George's life so that you can see how she identifies as a girl even from her earliest memories. Equally vivid and realistic are her family's reactions, which shift between support and disbelief as George grows up. The coda after Fred's death is especially well-done.
And For Some, Life is Only Ordinary by
luvscharlie - Sirius/Petunia, Vernon/Petunia, James/Lily, R
This is the story of how being the ordinary sister shapes Petunia's life, and it is told with great empathy. While first person narration usually puts me off, Petunia's voice here is absolutely perfect, and also necessary to understanding the complex forces of love, envy, and insecurity that govern her relationship with Lily. Both sisters here are flawed, but in a human way rather than an unlikeable one. I particularly liked how I could see that Petunia was misinterpreting some of Lily's behavior, but that Lily's attitude supplied just enough reason for Petunia to doubt her motives. I think this story will resonate with any woman who has ever felt ordinary, ugly, or ignored in their family, their relationship, or their school.
On Apathy and Its Variations by
ldkirby - Sherlock, Harry Watson
In which Harry gives Sherlock the "break his heart and I will break you" speech. This sounds like the basis for a schmoopy story, but it's completely not. The author handles Harry's alcoholism and Sherlock's POV adroitly, with a nice nod to Sherlock's past problems with addiction.
1,023 Days on Earth (1959 words) by
cosmic_llinA young Guinan crash lands on Earth. In some ways, this Guinan is so different from her adult counterpart, yet her calm self-assurance perfectly fits the woman we see on the Enterprise. In the hands of a less capable author, her adventures on Earth might strain credibility, but in this story, they feel like a natural outgrowth of her personality.
The Opening Universe (The Awful Mystery) by
golden_dOFC lovers, this story is for you. Before Tosh, Owen, Ianto, and Gwen, Jack commanded other Torchwood teams, and this was one of them. Told through the eyes of a young woman who falls through the Rift, this fic gets the dysfunctional family dynamic of Torchwood just right without feeling like a retread of the series. (Author warns for suicidal thoughts and behaviors)
