Eton boys given private audience with Vladimir Putin

A group of boys from Britain's prestigious Eton College have met Russia's President Vladimir Putin during a visit to the Kremlin.
The rare meeting, held in a state room, apparently lasted at least an hour, during which Mr Putin discussed world affairs with the 11 boys.
One of the boys present, David Wei, said on Facebook he had sent more than 1,000 emails to set up the meeting.
He said Mr Putin, renowned as a tough leader, had shown "his human face".
Photos of the event were posted on social media, showing the group shaking hands with Mr Putin and sitting around a table listening to the Russian leader, wearing translation headsets.
Later, they posed for an informal group photo, apparently in an ante room, celebrating their success in gaining access to the Kremlin's inner sanctum.
'Sleepless nights... paranoia'
David Wei said in his Facebook post: "It took me a total of ten months, 1040 emails, 1000 text messages, countless sleepless nights, constant paranoia during A2 exam season, declining academic performance...but here we are. Guys, we truly gave Putin a deep impression of us and he responded by showing us his human face."
Another of those present, Trenton Bricken, said on Facebook: "Two hour meeting with President Putin. He was small in person but not in presence."
The boys are said to have arranged the visit on their own initiative but details remain unclear.
One suggestion was that the meeting had been facilitated by Father Tikhon Shevkunov, a Russian Orthodox abbot said to be close to Mr Putin, who reportedly spoke at Eton earlier this year.
The school, which was founded in 1440 and has educated 19 British prime ministers, said in a statement: "This was a private visit by a small group of boys organised entirely at their own initiative and independently of the college."
The Kremlin has not commented.

Информационные агентства удалили из своих фотоархивов снимки встречи Путина со студентами британского Итонского колледжа в Кремле. О самой встрече Путина и десятерых студентов элитного британского Итонского колледжа 1 сентября сообщила британская газета The Times. На страницах газеты были опубликованы несколько снимков с этой встречи. Согласно подписи под одним из фото, снимок был сделан Михаилом Климентьевым (личный фотограф Владимира Путина), затем передан ТАСС, после куплен сервисом Getty Images. На сайте ТАСС сейчас фотографий с итонцами нет, на сайте «РИА Новости» фото со встречи нет, на сайте Getty Images снимков также нет.
Четыре фотографии с этой встречи сейчас размещены на сайте латвийского агентства Leta, под ними стоит отметка ТАСС с запросом удалить все фотографии с подписью «Президент Путин встречается со студентами Итонского колледжа», датированные 25 августа 2016 года».
The Times указывала, что встреча прошла во время британских банковских каникул 27-29 августа.
РБК является подписчиком фотобанка ТАСС; редакция запросила фотографии со встречи, но снимков в базе уже не обнаружила. Убрать снимки из фотобанка потребовала пресс-служба президента, сообщили сотрудники фоторедакции ТАСС. Официальный представитель ТАСС отказался от комментариев. Такую же просьбу из Кремля передали и агентству «РИА Новости», рассказал РБК сотрудник фотослужбы ТАСС, к которому РБК обратился как подписчик. Сотрудник пресс-службы «РИА Новости» сказала РБК, что информацией о просьбе Кремля удалить фотографии встречи не обладает.< Снимки попросили убрать, потому что встреча была неофициальной и публиковать снимки встречи не предполагалось, объяснил РБК человек, знакомый с ходом подготовки мероприятия. Сначала предполагалось, что Путин встретится со студентами официально, но в последний момент этот формат изменился, но фотослужбы предупредить не успели, объяснил он.
«Это была закрытая встреча, в ТАСС попали фото по ошибке. По нашей просьбе их удалили», - прокомментировал РБК пресс-секретарь президента Дмитрий Песков. Ранее он рассказывал о частном характере встречи.
Архимандрит Тихон (Шевкунов), которого называли организатором этой встречи, также рассказал об изменении формата встречи. По его словам, руководство колледжа сначала рассматривало два варианта визита студентов в Москву: в качестве частных лиц и в качестве официальной делегации, но впоследствии было решено остановиться на первом варианте.
К встрече с российским лидером студенты Итона готовились почти год в обстановке практически полной секретности, писала The Times. Один из участников встречи Дэвид Вэй сообщил, что для ее организации потребовались «десять месяцев, 1040 писем, 1000 текстовых сообщений и бесчисленные бессонные ночи».
Визит студентов был направлен на разрядку отношений Запада с российским лидером, утверждало издание.

ELEVEN Eton pupils met Vladimir Putin in Moscow - pipping PM Theresa May.
The British Prime Minister is still waiting for her first face-to-face talks with hardman Putin since moving into No 10 last month.

But while Mrs May waits for her first audience at next week’s G20, the pupils got a personal invite into the heart of Putin’s Kremlin HQ last week.
In an astonishing set of photos, the boys - some wearing official Eton school ties - were seen shaking hands with the President.
Others show them wearing translation headsets, sitting next to Putin around a gilded meeting table.
Incredibly, the students were granted the hour-long audience in the same room where Putin recently hosted Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
And minutes later they jokingly posed for pictures in another room to mark the astonishing visit.
In one photo two lads are seen lounging on white Kremlin chairs, with one holding up a decanter of red wine.

Another shows the students posing for a group picture - with three boys lying down on the Kremlin carpet, pulling poses for the camera.
Many of the photos were later posted on public Facebook pages and the pupils were also interviewed on Russian TV.
The group’s visit was privately arranged and was not an official school trip.
It comes as Mrs May tries to thaw icy London-Moscow relations next week, caused by Russia’s Ukraine policy and its support for Assad’s regime in Syria.
Russian long-range bombers and submarines have also strayed close to British territory in recent months.

Earlier this month the PM’s spokeswoman described the phone call between the leaders and said: “The Prime Minister noted the importance of the relationship between the UK and Russia, and expressed the hope that, despite differences on certain issues, they could communicate in an open and honest way about the issues that mattered most to them.
“They looked forward to seeing each other at the G20 summit in China next month.”
The pupils’ trip to Moscow is believed to have been set up by Russian Bishop Tikhon Shevkunov - dubbed Putin’s “personal confessor”.
He is thought to have visited the famous college, where fees cost £37,000-a-year, in March to give a talk, when one of the boys took his contact details.
They then wrote to him, asking if he could set up an audience with Putin and Bishop Tikhon agreed.
And last week the group of Eton pupils jetted off to Russia for a sightseeing tour.

But one of boys, Marc Woernle, 18, wrote on Facebook: “We had an incredible time, and thank you so much to the people who made this happen, Natalya, Evgeny Markin, and Evgeny Zhadkevich, Nikolai, Bishop Tikhon, our many tour guides, and drivers, and organizers, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to help us.
“We are incredibly grateful to Bishop Tikhon and President Putin for inviting us, and for the hospitality going above and beyond what we expected.”
A source close to the students said: “They didn’t tell anyone they were going, I would assume it was so the school didn’t find out because I don’t think they would be happy.
“They went last week, I’m not sure on the details entirely, I don’t know who paid for the flights out there.
“From what I understand, they were talking to him about Eton because he had a keen interest in the college, mainly due to previous politicians in the UK who had attended.
“After they got home, the boys posted the pictures to social media, which I thought was strange because it looked like they had been trying to keep it quiet previously.
“I know the boys through friends, who showed me the pictures on social media.”

Since Peter Reznikov took the post the school has claimed it has seen the number of students taking up Russian soar six-fold.
Last night an Eton College spokeswoman said: “This was a private visit by a small group of boys organised entirely at their own initiative and independently of the College.”
The Kremlin declined to comment.
