So like, I've mentioned this mythical Cut and Run series a few times, but always glossed over it because I wanted to make a big giant post about how awesome it is and just a throwaway wouldn't do it justice

Doesn't matter. What are your three favorite standalone books and three favorite authors in general? .... Fiction, though. But in fiction, anything goes.
Three authors I can do - Ursula K. LeGuin, Neil Gaiman, Anton Chekhov (the list will change in five minutes or so XD).
Three books are not do-able, too many good ones! Give me a direction: SF? Fantasy? Classics? Contemporary?
Or rather let's try this:
Fantasy: * Good Omens by Gaiman & Pratchett * The Watch series by Lukyanenko (the first one can be read as a stand alone) * Gentlemen of the Road: A Tale of Adventure by Michael Chabon (though this one is almost historical? at least there is no magic and stuff, but it's such a clear nod to Michael Moorcock's stories that I count it as fantasy)
Science Fiction: * The Dispossessed by Ursula K. LeGuin * The Silent Empire series by Steven Harper (the first one can be read as a stand alone) * Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Classics: * Paradise Lost by John Milton * Ficciones by Borges (short stories; among the best ever) * The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum by Heinrich Böll (Erm - German, but very well known here)
Contemporary:* Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury
