Jess had to sit down. She had to. There was too much - too many emotions, too many feelings. She stared across the room - pretty Eddie, proper Eddie, her hair still done up and pinned at the back of her head because she felt like leaving it down was too intimate; staring up into the human's face with those huge gold goo-goo eyes and love pouring out of her like a waterfall.

Jess felt a small hand squeeze on her shoulder and she looked up, grateful. "Thanks, Al," she whispered, and her lover leaned down to peck her on the lips.

Alistair Cullen was the most gorgeous creature in the world. Objectively, Jess knew that that wasn't true - Ross was way too fond of his looks but fuck, he was a handsome sonova. Jess just preferred her pretty, edgy, flamboyant boy. Ali was the one everyone thought was gay, and here he was, with Jessica. Probably the most feminine, except maybe Eddie. Shyest, for sure. But Ali could draw her right out of her shell with one eyeliner-rimmed wink.

She was still trying to decide how she felt about Isaac. Eddie was mad about him, obviously, but that itself wasn't enough for Jess to really like her. He was sort of... what was the word? Well, dumb, to be sure. Intelligent, but dumb. Clumsy. Awkward. Shy.

So, probably a good match for Eddie, really.

Jess just wanted to know if that reticence was natural, or if Isaac was trying to hide something. She couldn't feel him, and that... that was worrying. Even though Eddie had said she couldn't read him, either, so maybe it was something to do with Isaac? Still weird. Still unnerving.

Ali was talking to him, now.

If Ali was as gay as everyone said he was, Jess thought, they might make a cute couple. He was, like, a head shorter than Isaac - maybe more - and just. That bubble-butt. The cute little laugh. The way Isaac got all flustered and didn't know what to do because a guy was touching him. It was really funny, I mean, really, and Jess had to duck her head to hide her snorting giggle.

She heard someone come up behind her, and felt a wave of calm wash over her. Oh, yes. Yes, please.

"Are you all right, Jess?"

Caroline Cullen, their warm, smart, beautiful den mother. She was still in her scrubs, light blue today, and looked a bit worn and weary and all the more beautiful for it. Jess pushed to her feet and ran at her chest, hugging her tightly. Drinking up her warmth and calm.

"Oh, darling. If it's too heavy in there, you can leave."

"It's not bad," she muttered, though it was half a lie. "Eddie's just. You know."

Caro nodded. She did know. "Go see if your father needs help in the kitchen. I'll tell Ali."

And Jess fled to the safety of Esmond's baking, because it wasn't that she didn't like Isaac - she was just, well. Kind of uncomfortable, with how much Edwina Cullen adored him.
