Is this a mission? What if we don't finish it?

It's an optional way to earn money. I may not accept you for some future jobs if you take the job and don't deliver the package.

That doesn't sound too bad. Do we need a partner?

Nope, not unless you can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

Right, I'm here. Where do I pick up the package?

[The young woman, who is almost aggressively average, sits behind the counter looking bored.]

A package? Yeah, OK.

[She reaches behind the counter and produces a box, plain brown, a cube about 12" on each side. There is a metallic gold stripe running all the way around it, about halfway up.]

This one is for -- oh, 12 Portmeirion Terrace in the Residential district. Those fancy condos... you know the ones I mean.

[Suddenly, she loses interest in you entirely, returning to her desk a few feet away, sitting, and staring at some papers there.]

[A few seconds later, the box emits a faint chiming noise, gone so quickly that it may not really have happened at all.]

[Mello's glad he replaced his sunglasses, but annoyed that it's too cool outside for his leather vest. He turns up the collar of his new shirt and keeps a sharp eye out on his approach to the address.]

All right. I'm here to pick up the package.

A package? Yeah, OK.

[She reaches behind the counter and produces a box, dark red, about 4 inches by 6 inches and 3 inches tall, obviously a gift of some kind. There is a metallic gold stripe running all the way around it, about halfway up.]

This one is for -- 18 Goldsmith St. in the Business District. I think that might be the Lindemeier Building. It says 35th Floor, too.

[Suddenly, she loses interest in you entirely, returning to her desk a few feet away, sitting, and staring at some papers there.]

[The box is heavy enough that you'll have unexpected difficulty lifting it; you'll need both hands.]

[Mello's annoyed by how heavy the box is, and even more so when he has to put it down and rest for a second what turns out to be about halfway to the Lindemeier Building. He can't walk as far or as fast as he used to. He doesn't open the box, but he curses it under his breath as he goes the last few blocks. As a point of pride, though, he doesn't put it down in the elevator to the 35th floor. He's annoyed again when he steps out: which suite?]

Hey! Delivery!

[The nervous-looking man in his early twenties who peeks his head out of a door about ten feet down the hall from where Mello stands has "temp receptionist" written all over him.]

Yeah, we're the only leased office on this floor. You can drop it off on the counter in here -- do I need to sign something?

[He doesn't enjoy running errands, but he's pretty sure the money will be worth it. So he shows up at the address, glancing around.]

Here for a package.

A package? Yeah, OK.

[She reaches behind the counter and produces a box, black, about 12x12x18", with holes punched all over the sides from about halfway up the side to the top. The holes are all above the metallic gold stripe that runs all the way around the box.]

This one is for -- 11615 Sinatra Avenue, in the Entertainment District. Is that a club or something?

[Suddenly, she loses interest in you entirely, returning to her desk a few feet away, sitting, and staring at some papers there.]

[Before you have a chance to lift the box, a soft violet glow pulsates from within it, lasting about five seconds before it fades.]

...Thanks.

[Mello can't help but be suspcious, as he takes it.

As he leaves, he peeks into one of the holes, but of course can't really see anything.

Well then. Off to this address.

It takes him a little while to get there, but he shows up, and it is a club. The address is marked at the back entrance, so that's the door he knocks on.]

...Delivery.

[The door is opened by an attractive woman with pale skin and long, obviously dyed black hair; she wears heavy eyeliner and red lipstick, and her nose is pierced.]

Yeah? Oooh, is it my bean light?

[The young woman, who is almost aggressively average, sits behind the counter looking bored.]

A package? Yeah, OK.

[She reaches behind the counter and produces a box, shiny dark blue, about the size of a shoebox. There is a metallic gold stripe running all the way around it, about halfway up.]

This one is for 15 Culpepper Lane in the residential district. Isn't Culpepper one of those streets with a lot of cheap old apartments on it?

[Suddenly, she loses interest in you entirely, returning to her desk a few feet away, sitting, and staring at some papers there.]

[The box suddenly shifts about an inch from where it had been -- then, two inches in the opposite direction. It's as if whatever is inside it has suddenly become active.]
