Variations ArcTitle: Roy
Author:
honookoRating: PG
Warning: Hughes!babble, spoilers for Winry's parents.
Summary: In this world, he didn't have someone to distract him from the past.
(
Lt. Colonel Roy Mustang talked on the phone often, but rarely was it willingly. )
Dangit, why would this version of Roy do what the other version doesn't? Why would he go plant himself in the life of a version of Winry that has a complete set of surrogate parents living down the road who are only too happy to take care of her in the abscence of her real ones, when the canon!Roy doesn't comfort the version who has only an old grandmother and two neighbourhood boys who have also been orphaned? The presence of the Elrics down the Road would have in no way influenced Roy's wretchedness after the execution; or rather, if he were at all aware of the happy surrogate parents down the road, he'd have felt *less* guilty, knowing that their daughter would still have familial support.
Roy's lack of rank can be explained by a lack of Ed in one sense, but not in another. I get the sense that he has reduced ambition too. This hasn't really been addressed in any of your Roy fics yet, but I don't get the feeling that he wants to be Fuhrer as badly as he does in Canon. Obviously, this is injured conjecture, but since we stem Roy's sincere ambition of national domination from his angst over killing the Rockbells and Hughes' subsquent slaps in the face, I don't see how Roy's angst would have been lessened by the presence of the Elrics down the road to the point where even 4 years (correct me if I'm wrong) after he should be promoted to Colonel, he's still floating Lt. C. I will overlook this, however, and attribute it to lack of Ed.
Everyone together now! NIT! PICK! NIT! PICK!

Again, Fate is the key in understanding 'Variations'. Roy was not fated to guide Fullmetal, and there isn't going to be a Fullmetal to distract him. I sincerely believe that Ed's presence helped Roy to get over his past and DEAL. And seeing Ed strive for something helped Roy subconciously set a standard of ambition for himself. He wouldn't have tried to damn hard if Ed hadn't set that example. Make sense?
As for why he went to Winry, well. If one of his future ways of coping is gone, then he finds a new one. :D
